Medical Assistant (MA) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Urgent Care

Major Responsibilities Prepares and rooms the patient for exam by obtaining vital signs and documenting/updating pertinent health information (chief complaint, allergies, medications). Performs laboratory procedures such as strep test, wound culture, specimen collection using aseptic technique and infection control guidelines. Assists the physician with procedures and surgeries including pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, cautery, colposcopy, etc. Administers medications under physician orders, including immunizations, antibiotics, pain medication, vitamins, topical agents, insulin; initiates, maintains and discontinues IV therapy with selected fluids and pre‑mixed medications. Provides basic patient education on tasks, treatment and self‑care; follows up on laboratory or imaging requests, prescription refills, new appointments and referrals; refers questions to nurses or physicians per scope of practice and relays information back to patient. Communicates with physicians and other team members; documents and communicates accurate and timely information regarding patient conditions. Performs advanced clinical tasks such as removal of sutures and staples, catheterization, audiograms, phlebotomy, EKG, spirometry, Holter monitor application, casting, complex wound care under supervision. Organizes and prepares exam rooms, labs and work areas including cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, maintaining equipment; performs patient positioning and transporting duties which require lifting and pushing/pulling, using proper technique. Completes routine maintenance and quality monitoring of clinic equipment using appropriate cleaning, sterilizing and caring techniques. Participates in patient‑centered initiatives, care management, performance and quality improvement activities. Demonstrates knowledge and skills appropriate to the age of patients served, including principles of growth and development, assessment of data and interpretation of information for age‑specific needs. Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license issued by the state. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association within 45 days unless otherwise determined. For Medical Assistants: BLS certification from the American Heart Association within 45 days unless otherwise determined. Education Required LPN: Completion of an accredited practical nursing program beyond high school. Medical Assistant: GED or high‑school equivalency; completion of an accredited medical assistant program or at least two years of verifiable full‑time experience within the last five years. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills within the medical assistant scope after demonstrated competency. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain professional relationships with patients, team members and physicians. Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, Windows navigation, and use of electronic mail and electronic medical record systems. Demonstrates customer‑service skills that support a positive patient experience. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday. Ability to lift 35 pounds without assistance; patient lifts over 35 pounds require patient‑handling equipment and, when available, assistance from another team member. Assessment of unique patient‑lifting situations on a case‑by‑case basis. Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, touch and fine‑hand manipulation skills. Will be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and bodily fluids; required to wear protective clothing and equipment. Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
