Position Description
Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
- Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads and put up warning signs, and organize response of crews.
- Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
- Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
- Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
- Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
- Monitors materials testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
- Operates light and heavy equipment.
- Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
- Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.
Experience: 5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

Competencies: Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous materials Incident management procedures Inventory/stock control procedures Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes Maintenance contract inspection procedures Expert skill in Operating light and heavy highway equipment Proficient skill in Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment Prioritizing and organizing work assignments Training in a classroom, office, or field environment Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others Maintaining a safe working environment Ability to Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
Standing-prolonged periods of time
Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
Conditions of Employment:

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing. Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) does not authorize "medical marijuana" under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position. Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
