Job TitleThis position is a blend of general anesthesia and cardiac anesthesia.Function/Scope Of The PositionThe staff anesthesiologist administers anesthesia care alone or supervises physicians in-training (residents) or certified registered nurse anesthetists. When working alone, he/she examines the patient before and after anesthesia, writes pre- and post-anesthesia orders, confirms that the patient is ready for anesthesia before induction, manages the anesthetic period, and follows patients if appropriate in the post-anesthesia period.Duties/Tasks And ResponsibilitiesWhen supervising trainees, an attending anesthesiologist must:Review the patient's history and the record of examination and tests.Personally examine the patient.Confirm or revise the course of treatment to be followed.Either perform the anesthesiologist's services required by the patient or supervise the treatment to assure that appropriate services are provided by residents or CRNAs.Be recognized by the patient as his/her attending anesthesiologist.The attending anesthesiologist, in providing medical direction of a CRNA must:Evaluate the pre-anesthetic examination and evaluation.Prescribe the anesthesia plan using appropriate techniques of the plan such as, but not limited to insertion of intravenous lines, arterial lines, central lines, insertion of other invasive monitoring catheters, regional anesthesia, and transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE).Either personally participate, or be immediately available, in the most demanding procedures in the anesthesia plan, including the induction and emergence.Ensure that any procedures in the anesthesia plan that he/she does not perform are performed by a qualified individual.Monitor the course of anesthesia administration at frequent intervals.Remain physically present and available for immediate diagnosis and treatment of emergencies.Provide indicated post-anesthesia care.Attending anesthesiologists in the service are also faculty members of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, they are expected to contribute to the teaching needs of the Department of Anesthesiology. This may include, but is not limited to preparing and delivering lectures, service as a preceptor, and providing one-on-one instruction. Attending anesthesiologists as faculty members are also expected to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the specialty by way of clinical and/or laboratory research.BenefitsVA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
