Camp Sports Instructor

The Camp Sports Activity Instructor is responsible for planning, leading, and implementing age-appropriate sports instruction and recreational activities for campers. The instructor promotes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and physical fitness while ensuring a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all participants. They are responsible for the overall safety, development, and success of campers participating in the sports program. Camp runs Monday through Friday, from June 29 through August 14, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Mandatory staff training will take place before beginning the role. Essential Functions Attend all required staff orientation and training sessions in June. Supervise campers daily, including meeting campers at designated pickup locations (92nd Street Y, West Side, or Downtown Manhattan) and supervising transportation to and from camp. Plan and lead developmentally appropriate sports lessons, drills, games, and physical activities. Teach fundamental athletic skills while encouraging teamwork, confidence, sportsmanship, and fair play. Lead up to six sports sessions per day for groups of 15–18 campers ages 5–11, including both typically developing campers and campers with special needs. Adapt activities to accommodate varying skill levels and individual needs. Ensure the health, safety, and well‑being of all campers during sports activities. Communicate regularly with the Head Counselor, Unit Supervisor, and Camp Director regarding camper progress, achievements, and any concerns. Participate in Family Visiting Night and all camp‑wide special events, including Israel Day, Shabbat, Carnival, and indoor programming during inclement weather. Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating leadership, enthusiasm, respect, and integrity. Foster an inclusive and supportive environment that reflects the camp's core values of compassion, kindness, leadership, courage, and mindfulness. Comply with all camp policies, safety procedures, dress code, and emergency protocols outlined in the Staff Manual. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods outdoors during the summer season. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Wear the provided staff shirt and appropriate athletic footwear while on duty. Maintain regular communication with the camp office regarding employment requirements and throughout the summer. Education, Skills, and Experience Bachelor's degree preferred. Experience coaching, teaching, or leading sports programs in a school, camp, recreational, or setting with children. Strong knowledge of team sports, recreational games, and physical education activities. Ability to plan, organize, and lead engaging sports instruction for children. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
