Registered Nurse OR - Surgical Services - Full Time/Evenings

Job Objective Under the supervision of the Director of Surgical Services and/or the OR Charge Registered Nurse, the Registered Nurse is responsible for the nursing care of patients undergoing surgical and/or other invasive procedures. The RN shall function under the guidelines of the AORN Standards and the policies and procedures of the hospital. Duties and Responsibilities Apply the nursing process in direct patient care. Provide accurate assessment and documentation of the patient’s physiological, psychosocial, cultural, developmental, socioeconomic, and spiritual needs. Ensure a safe intra‑operative period with general, regional, or local anesthesia. Create and maintain quality care for patients undergoing surgery. Allow patient participation in care and respect wishes such as decisions to decline blood transfusion. Act as patient advocate during general anesthesia, regional block, or sedation. Account for sponges, needles, instruments, and sharps during the intra‑operative phase. Monitor and report all intra‑operative events and interventions. Update nursing care plans and provide shift‑to‑shift hand‑offs. Adhere to all policies, procedures, and protocols, and seek clarification when needed. Perform technical equipment operation safely and efficiently. Maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment. Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and unit staff. Document outcomes of interventions and evaluate patient progress. Support team efforts during crises or emergency situations. Maintain confidentiality of patient, hospital, and department information. Participate in continuing education and quality improvement initiatives. Skills and Abilities Demonstrate knowledge and application of surgical asepsis and sterile technique. Work effectively under pressure in a fast‑paced environment. Organize work, establish priorities, and meet time parameters. Use all necessary equipment safely, efficiently, and with cost awareness. Supervise care provided by others and assume responsibility for the quality of care. Interpret and apply hospital policies and legal regulations. Communicate clearly and maintain professional relationships. Follow the chain of command and conflict management processes. Adhere to the AVH Code of Conduct, Compliance & Integrity Program, and other safety policies. Handle emergencies and respond to emergency codes. Support a culture of safety and ethical decision‑making. Experience and Education Two years of acute‑care nursing preferred; new‑grad training provided as appropriate. Maintain current licensure, certifications, education, and physical health standards. Participate in mandatory and optional educational activities and staff meetings. Required Licensure and Certifications Current California Registered Nursing license. BCLS certification. ACLS and PALS required for some specialty areas; additional certifications may be required by specific units. National certification such as Certified Nursing in the Operating Room (CNOR) desirable. Working Conditions May be required to take night and weekend call shifts in rotation with other OR staff. Work is performed under stressful, emotional, and physical conditions. Some procedures involve exposure to contaminated instruments and hazardous materials. Physical Requirements Regular lifting of patients and equipment. Standing for prolonged periods and moving quickly during emergencies. Exposure to contaminated instruments, chemicals, and potentially radiation. Compliance and Conduct Expectations Adhere to absenteeism, tardiness, leaves of absence, paid time off, and recording of hours policies. Follow the department dress code and telephone etiquette/standards. Maintain confidentiality of patient, hospital, and department information. Comply with all safety rules, code of conduct, and anti‑discrimination policies. Participate in departmental and hospital staff education and quality improvement activities.
