Job Title: CNC Operator – Metal Fabrication (1st Shift)

Job Description

This role supports a busy metal fabrication department by operating a variety of manual and automatic equipment and performing manual MIG welding on steel and stainless steel parts. You will start by working on equipment that aligns with your current experience and gradually cross-train on additional machines and processes. Over time, welding will become a significant portion of your responsibilities, representing approximately 30–40% of the role once fully trained. This position requires strong measurement skills, the ability to read and interpret blueprints, and a commitment to producing high-quality parts within tight tolerances.

Responsibilities

• Operate manual and automatic saws, drill presses, punch presses, shears, angle benders, sanders, and polishers to produce steel and stainless steel components.
• Perform manual MIG welding on steel and stainless steel parts, with welding responsibilities increasing to approximately 30–40% of the role once fully trained.
• Read and interpret blueprints to understand part specifications, dimensions, and fabrication requirements.
• Follow paper cut sheets accurately to ensure correct material usage and part production.
• Use tape measures, levels, and protractors to perform 1st, 5th, 10th, 20th, and subsequent piece inspections and verify parts meet specifications.
• Maintain dimensional accuracy by holding tolerances of +/- 0.5 and adjusting processes as needed to stay within required limits.
• Utilize computers for documentation, including recording production data, inspection results, and other job-related information.
• Participate in cross-training on various machines and processes within the metal fabrication department to expand skill sets.
• Assist with basic machine setup and, once trained, support die changes and adjustments to maintain efficient operation.
• Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area in the metal fabrication shop.
• Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively to ensure smooth workflow and timely completion of jobs.

Essential Skills

• Experience working in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing facility.
• Experience operating saws, punch presses, drill presses, benders, or similar metal fabrication equipment, or MIG welding experience, or status as an AWS new graduate.
• Ability to read a tape measure accurately to the 1/16 of an inch.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints for metal fabrication work.
• Ability to follow paper cut sheets and production instructions with precision.
• Ability to utilize computers for documentation and basic data entry.
• Ability to perform 1st, 5th, 10th, 20th, and subsequent piece inspections using tape measures, levels, and protractors.
• Ability to consistently hold tolerances of +/- 0.5.
• Capability to stand for the duration of the shift and work safely around metal fabrication equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• MIG welding experience on steel and/or stainless steel.
• AWS or other formal welding certifications.
• Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn how to change dies and perform basic machine adjustments once trained.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Reliable work habits and a positive, collaborative attitude.

Work Environment

This role is based in a metal fabrication shop within a non-climate-controlled manufacturing facility, where temperatures will reflect seasonal conditions. You will work on your feet for the duration of the shift and regularly handle metal materials and fabrication equipment such as saws, presses, benders, sanders, polishers, and welding tools. The schedule follows a 1st shift, Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with work on Fridays as necessary and rare, occasional additional work on Saturdays if needed. The shift includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch and two paid 15-minute breaks. The environment emphasizes safety, teamwork, and consistent production, with appropriate work attire and protective equipment required to safely operate machinery and handle metal components.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elkhart, IN.

The pay range for this position is $19.50 - $19.50/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Elkhart,IN.
