The Float Phlebotomist provides skilled support in blood collection and specimen preparation across multiple locations. This role focuses on performing high-quality venipuncture, handling and processing specimens accurately, and ensuring patients across a wide demographic feel comfortable and at ease throughout the collection process. The position is ideal for professionals who enjoy variety in their work setting and are willing to travel within the state to different sites.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring minimal discomfort and a positive experience for patients across a wide demographic, including pediatric and infant patients where applicable.

• Collect, label, and store specimens such as blood, urine, and fecal samples according to established procedures and specific test requirements.

• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients, ensuring they understand the process and feel at ease.

• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, verify that test requisitions or computer labels match scripts, and ensure 100% accuracy in labeling and documentation.

• Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders, and follow specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity during handling and transport.

• Package specimens for transport, store samples at required temperatures, and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes in line with established protocols.

• Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or documentation.

• Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection, handling, and processing.

• Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory result information when appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.

• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, including safety and infection control standards.

• Wear appropriate protective attire and follow all safety protocols while performing specimen collection and processing.

• Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

Essential Skills

• 2–3 years of experience performing blood draws in a clinical or laboratory setting.

• Proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture with straight needles and butterfly needles.

• Demonstrated experience in blood collection, specimen labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens for transport.

• Strong administrative skills and high attention to detail when matching requisitions, labeling specimens, and updating patient information.

• Ability to fully understand and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols.

• Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and adherence to safety and infection control standards.

• Ability to clearly and courteously explain specimen collection procedures to patients.

• Competence in handling pediatric and infant blood draws is highly valued.

• Capability to answer telephone inquiries and communicate laboratory results in a clear and professional manner.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience performing pediatric and infant blood draws is a plus.

• Comfort working in multiple locations and adapting to different clinical environments.

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to put patients at ease and work effectively with clinical staff.

• Ability to maintain specimen integrity by strictly following protocols for storage, temperature control, and transport.

• Willingness to attend annual department trainings and stay current with best practices and regulatory requirements.

Work Environment

This is a float position that requires in-state travel to multiple locations, including Port Chester, Mount Vernon, White Plains, Yonkers, and the Bronx. The role involves working in clinical or laboratory environments where phlebotomy and specimen processing are performed regularly. Standard protective attire and appropriate safety gear are required in accordance with OSHA and DEP regulations. The schedule typically includes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as needed, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. as needed, and every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The position offers a changing work setting and is well suited to individuals who enjoy variety and travel. There are no holiday or vacation shifts required as part of this role.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mount Vernon, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.
