Position Overview and QualificationsPOSITION SUMMARY
The primary function of this role is to provide respiratory care to patients as prescribed by the attending physician. You will also conduct diagnostic assessments to determine the necessity for and effectiveness of therapy.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Initiate, monitor, and manage mechanically ventilated patients.
- Assist in the placement of artificial airways.
- Conduct and document patient assessments, including breath sounds, airway patency, and cuff pressure at least once per shift.
- Verify and document ventilator functionality and patient status every four hours at a minimum.
- Support the transportation of patients who are dependent on ventilators.
- Assist during deliveries as needed for neonatal resuscitation and stabilization.
- Monitor ECMO as required.
- Administer and oversee respiratory care treatments.
- Provide therapy in accordance with established departmental policies.
- Evaluate patients within two hours of receiving respiratory therapy orders and initiate treatment as necessary.
- Educate patients and their families on proper respiratory therapy techniques.
- Ensure assigned areas are stocked appropriately at the end of each shift.
- Respond promptly to treatment needs in the Emergency Department.
- React immediately to emergency codes, managing the airway and external compressions effectively.
- Address all urgent patient situations, including Rapid Response, Stroke Alert, STEMI Alert, and Trauma Alert.
- Set up new oxygen starts promptly according to departmental policy.
- Adhere to established hospital and departmental infection control protocols.
- Document relevant information in the patient’s medical record.
- Accurately record all respiratory care interventions during your assigned shift.
- Document education provided to patients and families.
- Maintain current departmental records.
- Enter charges for services performed during each shift.
- Provide the incoming shift with an accurate patient report.
- Conduct non-invasive and invasive diagnostic tests and monitoring.
- Perform arterial blood gas sampling and analyses, communicating critical values immediately as per departmental policy.
- Conduct pulmonary function tests as ordered and report results within three hours.
- Perform bedside spirometry and accurately document results.
- Measure and record peak flow, inspiratory and expiratory force, and vital capacity accurately.
- Monitor pulse oximetry, transcutaneous CO2, and end-tidal CO2 levels.
- Perform EKGs as ordered.
- Monitor ECMO as appropriate.
- Conduct cleaning, preventive maintenance, and calibration of respiratory care equipment as needed.
- Clean, assemble, and verify the function of ventilators, documenting the process prior to patient use.
- Calibrate and maintain pulmonary function testing equipment according to manufacturer specifications and departmental policy.
- Perform arterial blood gas instrumentation calibration and maintenance in compliance with CAP requirements.
- Calibrate and troubleshoot TCM and oxygen analyzers.
- Act as a respiratory care protocol assessor.
- Assess patients based on physician-approved criteria within one hour of receiving the order and document findings.
- Write accurate therapy orders based on the triage score in the physician’s order sheet under “RCP.”
- Deliver initial therapies as prescribed.
- Reassess patients within the established timeframe, adjusting therapy as indicated and documenting changes.
- Communicate all RCP therapies—initial and modifications—to relevant staff members and document accordingly in departmental records.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within one year of starting employment.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (NBRC-RRT) certification.
- State Respiratory Therapist/Practitioner (RRT/RCP) certification.
- Associate Degree in a relevant field.
- Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
No travel is required for this position.
No prior experience is necessary.
