Resident EMT
Summer Discovery
EMT (Emergency Medical Technician)As an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), you'll serve as the operational backbone of your program's health center — managing student medical records, coordinating care logistics, and ensuring the health and safety of every student on campus. You'll be the first point of contact when a student isn't feeling well and the calm, capable presence in an emergency. This is a live-in role requiring availability around the clock, with a schedule that shifts based on the needs of students and the program.Essential FunctionsMedical Records Management: Review, maintain, and update all student medical forms in EMR, ensuring allergies, medications, restrictions, and behavioral health notes are accurately documented and communicated to relevant staff.Care Coordination: Schedule and coordinate all medical appointments, follow up with students, parents/guardians, and staff after each visit, and ensure all paperwork is collected, scanned, and uploaded promptly.Parent & Staff Communication: Keep parents informed of all medical visits and ensure the Program Director and supervising Resident Counselors are briefed on any student health considerations, including medications, dietary restrictions, and prescribed behavior-modifying drugs.Health Center Operations: Monitor and replenish health center supplies, maintain inventory, and ensure the health center is organized and operational throughout the program.Community Health Liaison: Establish a working relationship with the campus student health center and/or local non-emergency medical facility before the program begins. Prepare written directions to medical facilities for RCs and staff.Student Self-Medication Support: Administer and document the student self-medication model in accordance with parental waivers on file, ensuring full compliance and accurate tracking.Emergency Response: Administer life-saving interventions — including albuterol for severe asthma and epinephrine for anaphylaxis — within EMT-Basic scope of practice. Follow Summer Discovery emergency protocols and maintain direct communication with the Medical Director during the 9 AM–6 PM EST window.Student Support: Provide compassionate, non-judgmental care to students presenting with any symptom — physical or emotional. Never refuse a student's request for medical attention. Overprotection is always better than under protection.RC Support: Serve as the primary resource for Resident Counselors managing student illness or medical escorts, providing clear guidance and backup as needed.Policy Adherence: Follow all guidelines in the Employee Handbook, Staff Manual, and Summer Discovery medical protocols.Flexibility: Adapt to shifting priorities, same-day schedule changes, and unforeseen medical situations with composure and professionalism.Teamwork: Collaborate with the full campus team — leadership, RCs, and program staff — to ensure a safe and supportive experience for every student.Core CompetenciesExemplary Conduct: Exhibit leadership, honesty, and integrity, maintaining high standards of personal and professional behavior at all times.Judgment and Problem-Solving: Apply sound clinical and operational judgment in high-pressure situations and day-to-day decision-making.Positive Attitude: Bring a warm, approachable presence to every student interaction, fostering trust and a sense of safety.Attention to Detail: Maintain meticulous records and ensure no medical information falls through the cracks.Technical Skills: Comfortably navigate platforms such as PrepforSummer.com as well as standard office tools including computers, phones, and photocopiers.Physical DemandsHealth & Stamina: Maintain the physical and mental readiness to respond to student needs at any hour, including emergencies.Supervision: Monitor student health across large areas of campus, day and night.Movement: Navigate campus continuously throughout the day as part of daily operations.Living Conditions: Adapt to living and working in potentially non-air-conditioned spaces during summer.Schedule/LocationLocation: On-campus residency required for the full duration of the program. Summer location is discussed during the interview process and will depend on availability and program assignment.Orientation: Attend a paid staff orientation five to seven days prior to the program start. Active engagement and learning are expected throughout orientation.Work Schedule: Flexibility required given the dynamic, round-the-clock nature of residential program work. One day off is provided for every two weeks on campus.Commitment: This is a live-in role. You will be available to respond to student health needs at any time, including nights and weekends. Your schedule will shift based on program demands.Education/Experience/QualificationsAge Requirement: Must be at least 21 years of age by the start of the program.Certification: Active EMT-Basic certification required. Current CPR and First Aid certifications required.Experience: Prior experience working with middle or high school students in a healthcare, academic, recreational, or supervisory role.Recordkeeping: Demonstrated comfort with medical documentation and administrative coordination.On-Campus Residency: Ability to reside on campus for the entire duration of the program.
