Behavioral Health Technician – Behavioral Health Inpatient – Duke Regional Hospital (Night Shift) Duke University Health System – Duke Regional Hospital seeks to hire a Nursing Care Assistant who will embrace our mission of Advancing Health Together. Department Profile The current inpatient Behavioral Health facilities at Duke Williams Unit and Duke Regional have transitioned to a new state‑of‑the‑art facility located on the Duke Regional Campus in early Spring of 2021. The new unit comprises 42 private inpatient rooms. Duke strives to provide experienced and compassionate mental health care to adults 18 years and older through an interdisciplinary approach which includes psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, recreational therapists, and clinical social workers. Work Schedule Three 12‑hour shifts per week Night shift 7 p.m. – 7 a.m. Job Summary Perform a variety of non‑professional nursing duties in the direct care of patients under the supervision of an RN/LPN. Perform clerical duties involved in preparing, maintaining, and processing patient, unit, and hospital data and records, including operating the organization’s patient care information systems. Work Performed Observe patients and assess progress daily; report significant changes in patients’ condition and/or behavior to supervising RN. Interact with patients one‑to‑one, providing recreational or social activities and reinforcing patient teaching. Assist patients in activities of daily living, including making beds, bathing, personal hygiene, feeding, and dressing. Assist patients with position changes, range‑of‑motion exercises, transfers, and walking. Provide care and monitoring of patients in seclusion and/or restraint. Provide protection and control for patients as required to ensure patient safety in the facility. Participate in restraining combative patients as necessary. Ensure compliance with safety and infection control guidelines, including universal precautions for self and patients. Participate in staff discussions to assess, coordinate, and execute patient care. Maintain a clean, neat, and safe work environment; activities include tidying rooms, cleaning equipment, changing bed linens, restocking work areas, and keeping rooms and hallways clear of debris. Practice proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures, reporting any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or injuries to manager. Participate in review of activities and processes for work area; assist in implementing changes to effect continual improvement in services provided; comply with regulatory and legal requirements. Assist in organizing and conducting recreational activities. Interact with patients one‑to‑one and in small groups; assist patients in planning how the treatment plan can be optimized for their benefit. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Education High school diploma or equivalent required. Experience 1 year of experience working with patients with substance abuse, mental health, dementia diagnosis, or intellectual or developmental disability preferred. Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification Listing on the Nurse Aid Registry of North Carolina or Certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor in North Carolina or Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician in North Carolina or Certification as a Behavioral Health Technician by the Academy of Addiction Professionals or the American Medical Certification Association or, if a hire does not meet one of the four requirements, the BHT must start the process to complete one of the requirements within 1 year of employment and complete it within 2 years. BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation, typically during the first week of employment. CPI certification is strongly preferred.
