We are excited to welcome a Staff Developer to join our Billing and Payments team at 1Password, whose mission is to build a stable, resilient and scalable billing platform to support 1Password on its journey to 50 million active users. Reporting to the Billing Scale engineering team, the Staff Developer will be responsible for the continued development of the Billing Platform that supports all of 1Password’s B2C and B2B billing needs. In addition to this, this role will be responsible for helping to mentor senior and intermediate developers, as well as shaping the overall architecture and future of 1Password’s billing services. You will work in a Golang based environment, running services deployed on our Kubernetes clusters. You will build out the tooling and processes to migrate our existing customers to this new Billing Platform as new required features are created and deployed. This role requires deep technical expertise, strong knowledge of billing processes and vendors, and the ability to collaborate closely with multiple internal engineering and product teams. Your contributions will directly impact the bottom line at 1Password, helping to collect revenue from all of our customers. This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US. What we're looking for: You have 5+ years of billing system development experience at SaaS companies with demonstrated expertise in building and maintaining production systems that serve significant user bases You have deep Go programming expertise with proven experience coding API first backend technologies. You have hands-on experience with service-oriented architecture (SOA) and have actively participated in breaking up and extracting monolithic applications into distributed services. You understand the trade-offs and operational complexities this introduces You have production API development experience with deep familiarity with protocols, RESTful design principles, and building APIs that developers, services and users rely on You understand versioning, backward compatibility, and API evolution strategies You have experience with on-call responsibilities and production incident response. You're comfortable debugging complex distributed systems issues and implementing preventive measures You're a systems thinker who can see the big picture while handling implementation details. You can take large, ambiguous projects and break them down into manageable work streams and can coordinate with other developers on ownership of those workstreams You have strong collaboration skills with experience working closely with multiple engineering teams as an internal service provider. You understand how to gather requirements, communicate technical trade-offs, and deliver solutions that meet diverse team needs Bonus points for: Familiarity with Kubernetes and how to deploy services successfully Familiarity with CI/CD processes, including Gitlab CI and/or Github Actions Security experience with understanding of security-focused development practices, threat modeling, and building systems that handle sensitive data What you can expect: Help lead the development and maintenance of our Billing Platform Drive complex extraction projects, such as removing and/or rewriting legacy systems into modern components, requiring careful planning, rollback strategies, and coordination with dependent teams Collaborate extensively with internal engineering and product teams to understand their needs, gather requirements for new capabilities, align on delivery schedules and ensure successful adoption of services Participate in on-call rotations for billing services, responding to incidents, and implementing improvements to prevent future issues while maintaining high availability SLAs Mentor other engineers on best practices, Go development patterns, and distributed systems concepts through code reviews, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing sessions Shape the technical direction of our billing services by evaluating new technologies, proposing architectural improvements, and contributing to engineering-wide standards and practices Build monitoring and observability into billing services to ensure reliability and provide visibility into system performance for engineering, product and support teams You have hands-on knowledge of working with third-party payment providers (e.g., Stripe, etc) and can provide guidance for other engineers on best practices in their use. USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $192,000 USD and $278,000 USD, plus immediate participation in 1Password's benefits program (health, dental, 401k and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs. Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $167,000 CAD and $242,000 CAD, plus immediate participation in 1Password’s generous benefits program (health, dental, RRSP and many others), utilization of our generous paid time off, an equity grant and, where applicable, participation in our incentive programs.
