Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) – Part Time Req #: 0000243287 Department: Administration-Physicians Location: 200 Somerset St., New Brunswick, NJ 08901 Pay Range: $35.00 - $43.00 per hour (hourly position) Job Overview As a member of the health care team, the CDCES will be responsible for diabetes education, care of patients and families—both new onset and established diabetes—in children, adolescents, and young adults. This includes inpatient and outpatient settings, individual and group formats. The CDCES will provide education, assist with monitoring, and utilize CGMs and insulin pumps. Qualifications Required: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Nutrition, Pharmacy, or related health field Current certification as a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) or Certified Diabetic Educator (CDE) by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Dietitian (RD), Pharmacist (RPh), or other healthcare professional licensure as required by state law American Heart Association BLS Provider Certification Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience in diabetes education and management Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience in pediatrics Evidence of excellent verbal and written English communication skills Ability to collaborate with others Preferred: Master's degree Experience working in an outpatient or specialty clinic setting Certifications and Licenses Required Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) or Certified Diabetic Educator (CDE) Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Dietitian (RD), Pharmacist (RPh) American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider Certification Scheduling Requirements Part Time – 20 hours per week Essential Functions Provide patient education and ongoing support in consultation with physician and advanced practice nursing staff Perform complete educational and skills assessments for patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes managed on blood glucose monitoring devices, oral medications, insulin injections, and insulin pumps Deliver diabetes self‑management education to patients and families in one‑to‑one, group, and classroom settings, as well as electronically, by phone, or web‑based platforms Assist in the development, documentation, and implementation of education and treatment plans for patients, evaluating and meeting patient and family learning needs Evaluate achievement of learning goals and assist patients and families with decision‑making about diabetes self‑care, including meal planning, carbohydrate counting, exercise planning, daily schedule adjustments, and responding to high and low blood‑sugar readings Assist patient and family with sick‑day management guidelines and resource coordination Collaborate with nursing staff, chronic illness team, and other healthcare professionals in planning, providing, and evaluating patient and family education and implementation of system changes related to diabetes care Support research‑based projects, policy revisions, and maintain American Diabetes Association certification for the Children’s Specialized Hospital program Practice within the legal scope, national and specialty CDE standards, and applicable laws and regulations Other Duties Please note this job description is not designed to cover a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
