Warehouse Volunteer Coordinator
Under the supervision of the Operations & Food Strategy Manager, this position leads and works alongside volunteers in the warehouse. Responsibilities include training volunteers to inspect, sort, weigh, and prepare food and other products for distribution to partner agencies throughout central Alabama. The position also maintains accurate volunteer activity records and ensures compliance with AIB, USDA, Feeding America, and Community Food Bank standards. This is a hands-on, physical role that requires regular interaction with volunteers and the use of warehouse equipment, including pallet jacks and forklifts.
Volunteer Welcome & Experience
Serve as a secondary point of contact and ambassador for volunteers.
Welcome volunteers and create a positive, professional first impression.
Conduct volunteer orientations and communicate Food Bank policies, expectations, safety requirements, and appropriate conduct.
Provide volunteers with basic information about the organization, including key statistics, and answer questions about food insecurity and hunger as needed.
Work with Development volunteer coordinator to match volunteers with appropriate assignments based on group size, abilities, operational needs, and available work.
Check in with volunteer groups throughout their shift to ensure they have the resources and direction necessary to be successful.
Address volunteer questions, concerns, or issues promptly and professionally.
Develop and maintain processes that improve volunteer satisfaction and retention.
Recognize and thank volunteers for their contributions.
Operational Volunteer Support
Coordinate with Development volunteer coordinator to determine daily volunteer needs.
Ensure volunteer assignments support current operational priorities.
Communicate volunteer schedules and expected group sizes to operational teams.
Monitor volunteer work areas to ensure assignments are productive, safe, and appropriate.
Assist with activities such as food sorting, packing, boxing, labeling, repacking, cleaning, and other Food Bank projects as needed.
Ensure volunteers follow proper food safety, sanitation, PPE, and warehouse safety procedures.
Immediately communicate safety concerns, injuries, or incidents to appropriate leadership.
Help maintain clean, organized, and volunteer-ready workspaces.
Training & Safety
Provide volunteers with appropriate orientation and safety information before beginning work.
Ensure volunteers understand emergency procedures, restricted areas, PPE requirements, and facility expectations.
Reinforce safe lifting, material handling, food handling, and warehouse practices.
Work with Operations and Safety leadership to identify and address volunteer-related safety concerns.
Maintain required volunteer training and documentation.
Community & Group Engagement
Build positive relationships with volunteer groups and community organizations that encourage continued engagement.
Support corporate volunteer experiences and employee engagement opportunities.
Assist with volunteer recognition activities and opportunities as needed.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
Two years' experience in volunteer organization/ public relations preferred.
Skills and Abilities
Must have excellent organizational skills, time management skills and ability to multi-task.
Excellent customer service and relationship building skills.
Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
Ability to self-start, work independently as well as work effectively in a team.
Outgoing and communicative by nature.
Ability to motivate others and foster an energizing, cooperative environment.
Proficiency in using databases and Microsoft Office Professional Suite.
Essential Physical Requirements
Ability to process information through a computer system.
Ability to communicate with diverse constituents and staff.
Ability to read, count, and write accurately to complete all documentation.
Ability to lift forty-five pounds.
Ability to operate pallet jacks and forklift.
Ability to: walk, sit, squat, bend, twist, and reach at various heights above and below shoulder level, push or pull; lift large, heavy, awkward objects while maneuvering in a confined space.
Ability to work in a warehouse climate in extreme temperatures between -10 to 100 degrees F
Ability to work varied hours/days to oversee responsibilities.
