Animal Services Officer

City of Jacksonville, Texas Position Description Job Title : Animal Services Officer Department : Neighborhood Services Division Reports To : Neighborhood Services Manager/Animal Services Manager Positions Supervised : None FLSA Status : Non‑Exempt Pay Grade : H05 Education and Experience An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Education: High School diploma or GED. Experience: No previous experience required. Animal service municipal government experience preferred with exceptional customer service. Certifications: Complete animal control course within 6 months of employment. Complete continuing education as required by Texas Department of State Health Services to maintain certification. Licensing: Must possess Texas Class "C" driver license with clear driving record. Residency: None Summary Day‑to‑day responsibilities include protecting residents from and educating the community about stray or vicious animals and related diseases; working with animal shelter partnership; capture, impound, relocate, dispose of animals and maintain records. Essential Job Functions Patrol an assigned area for stray, vicious or injured animals and respond to citizen complaints regarding the same. Provide support and care to animals. Enforce law and ordinances to protect citizens and property. Share information and work with other law enforcement agencies as directed and appropriate. Maintain current knowledge of applicable animal laws and statutes and pending legislation. Work shift as assigned. License animals within the city limits. Issue warnings and citations. Respond to calls and investigate animal cruelty complaints. Conduct animal bite investigations and place animals in quarantine. Pick up live and dead animals to keep the city free of road obstructions, health hazards and stray animals. Assist with the operation and maintenance of the Jacksonville Animal Shelter. Ancillary Job Functions Maintain shelter facilities, firearm, vehicle and equipment in accordance with state regulations. Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned by management. Equipment Used Copier, printer, Microsoft Office, Outlook, power pressure washer, lawn mower, copier, scanner, body camera, dart gun, Eforce, euthanasia and anased drugs, motor vehicle, on‑call cell phone, catching pole, catching net, snake pole, bolt cutter, telephone, buzzer gun, leashes, cages, large tongs, cat gloves. Work Environment May be required to work in high or dangerous places. Work may involve potentially life‑threatening exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, noise, chemicals/gases, contagious diseases, airborne particles/pathogens, and/or physical trauma. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be exposed to bio hazards or bloodborne pathogens. Work may potentially involve risk of exposure to electrical shock. Physical Abilities The physical demands described are representative of those required to perform essential functions. Must be able to lift 60 or more pounds. Total Compensation (Eligible Positions) Paid holidays. 18 days per year of paid vacation accrued the first year of service. Longevity pay. Certification/education pay. Participation in Texas Municipal Retirement System (7% employee contribution, 2:1 City match). Health, dental and life insurance. Vested after 5 years of service. Eligible for retirement after 20 years. Additional Requirements Criminal history, drug test, and driver's license check required.
