Performs design efforts and provides technical expertise, under the general supervision of the Design Manager. This sequence of job titles reflects increasing professional capabilities in the field of Architecture, including evaluating specialized project needs and incorporating them into the goals of JHM. Essential Functions Assists in the development of and/or reviews project program and scope requirements with client, in‑house design team or outside consultants. Obtains field measurements, documents site conditions, translates scopes into design, prepares, reviews and edits project drawings and specifications. Works with in‑house design staff to provide technical knowledge, as required. Provides construction support services: reviews submittals, attends progress meetings, develops change orders, resolves field problems, and assists commissioning effort. Applies professional registration stamp and signature to construction documents. Coordinates and oversees post‑occupancy evaluations. Assists project management and technical services groups, and Designers and Drafters, as requested. Provides direction, monitors and reviews design work produced by outside consultants. Ensures that project programs reflect Hospital improvement efforts, such as design standards, standard specifications, and special projects. Ensures that institutional priorities, imperatives and patient care initiatives are addressed and supported by design and implementation strategy. Uses relevant references to ensure successful project progress. Ensures that proper codes / documents are available to and used by design staff. Observes and assesses existing conditions and situations in the facility. Investigates and recommends changes to improve design efforts. Problem Complexity Distinguishes project requirements from client desires. Obtains field measurements, documents site conditions, determines budgetary and time constraints in order to prepare preliminary plans and cost estimates and develop final construction drawings, specifications, and costs. Provides insight concerning technical issues to Assistant Director and/or Design Manager. Autonomy And Responsibility Shall be required to sign, seal and otherwise professionally endorse products of architectural design that have been prepared under the reasonable control and oversight of the employee. Provides technical oversight of work performed by Sr. Architectural Designers, Architectural Designers, and/or Drafters. Provides architectural technical expertise and oversight as requested by Design Manager. Oversees special individual projects of limited scope at the direction of the Design Manager. Collaborates with other designers and/or Project Managers in project scope review and project requirements discussion with clients. Interprets and establishes requirements of work to be done. Coordinates efforts of consultants and/or vendors. Reviews the work of and directs team consultants as required to support team effort. Leads design effort of the project team on major renovation / reconstruction projects, under Design Manager’s guidance. Recommends and participates in departmental design development (design standards, standard specifications), improvement, and implementation. Proposes projects or program changes based on observation and assessment of existing conditions and situations in the facility. Upon direction during the project planning phase, conducts code / zoning / regulatory searches to determine project constraints. Coordinates post‑occupancy evaluations. Participates in master planning activities. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Master’s in architecture preferred (may be waived according to schedule below). Preferred: four (4) years of contemporary experience in the design of medical facilities, research laboratories or similar building projects. Education & Experience Requirements Professional Architect III – Master’s Degree: 5 years architectural design experience. Professional Architect III – Bachelor’s Degree: 10 years architectural design experience. Professional Architect III – Associate’s Degree: 14 years of experience. Professional Architect III – High School Diploma: 18 years of experience. Required Licensure, Certification, On‑going Training Current, valid professional registration as Registered Architect (R.A.) in Maryland. Salary Range Minimum $44.81/hour – Maximum $71.70/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
