Position Information Position Title Position Title Laboratory Aide Department Department Natural Resources Management (Geology) Department Summary Maintaining a modern paleomagnetic-rock magnetic laboratory is critical for the mission of the Geology discipline to maintain an active student-oriented research program, to provide a much needed service laboratory for PhD granting institutions nationally and internationally, and facilitate service revenue generation via local, state, and federal agency contract work. This vision aligns with the department and the university strategic plan. TECHNICIAN RESPONCIBILITIES : The staff member will work in multiple roles to assist with management of the paleomagnetic-rock magnetic laboratory via assisting student and visitor users and to keep the instruments running. General Job Description Job description may include technical and specialized duties requiring a high skill level in oral and written communications, critical thinking, initiative, and independent work requiring knowledge of theory, practices and procedures of the assigned area. Skills and/or Duties: Analyzing data Preparing records Writing reports Creating videos Managing confidential information Maintain regular attendance Perform other job duties as assigned Specific Duties Specific duties include: The responsibility for the scientific direction of the research activities and technical direction of the facility. Organization of the laboratory facility and sample archives. Serve as the primary resource and contact person for visitors. Handle administrative duties, software development, assist students/visitors with experiment design and data interpretation on all laboratory instruments. Budgeting, purchasing (under supervision of the lab director), and lab-time allocation. Web site design, maintenance, database management, and updates to the website as needed ( Instrument calibration and maintenance of all laboratory instruments. Updating the on-line literature database, maintaining the lab computer network, and working with students and visitors on specific projects as needed. Conduct analyses using all laboratory instruments, lab repairs (under supervision of the lab manager), standard lab preparation of samples, and mentoring undergraduate students. GIS database construction of studies conducted in the laboratory. Writing basic computer code to prepare the AGICO JR6 data files for migration into the MAGic database for archival purposes and use by other scientists and the public. Minimum Qualifications Education: College student at NMHU and classified as a sophomore, junior, or senior and enrolled with a minimum of six (6) credit hours Successfully completed one semester at NMHU; Preferred Qualification: Minimum 3.0 GPA Experience: Work experience in college Preferred Qualifications Applicant must demonstrate 1) motivation and self responsibility commensurate with experience, 2) ability to operate complex lab equipment, and 3) understand laboratory safety protocol and technical knowledge of geophysical laboratory operations.
