The Lab/QC Technician is responsible for executing and maintaining the site's quality assurance processes. This role ensures compliance with all laboratory safety and environmental requirements while supporting cost control initiatives, quality reporting, and equipment maintenance activities. The position is also responsible for maintaining product compliance programs, including Safe Quality Food (SQF) and NSF/ANSI 60 standards. Key duties include performing day-to-day quality testing of plant production processes and conducting raw material analyses to ensure product specifications are consistently met. Timely and accurate communication of test results is essential to support efficient plant operations and maintain customer satisfaction. RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS: 1. Leadership for laboratory safety and environmental:
- Ensure a safe workplace and regulatory compliance with federal (OSHA), state, local, and Company safety policies.
- Support Environmental Health and Safety initiatives and awareness programs.
- Actively participate in audits for regulatory, quality, safety and environmental compliance at the site.
- Be a leader and promoter of employee safety culture.
- Maintain quality assurance programs.
- Accurately sample and measure chemical and physical properties on all types of raw and finished products following established laboratory guidelines.
- Effectively document, interpret and communicate analysis to maintain product quality.
- Prepare charts and graphs of data and enter data into computer for analysis.
- Conduct quality audits in the various departments to ensure consistently high quality of various products.
- Effectively communicate quality findings with team members and report non-conformances to leadership.
- Test moisture, viscosity and core on final product.
- Maintain chemical solutions, laboratory instruments and work environment in a clean and safe manner.
- Maintain laboratory supplies and related inventory.
- Communicate needed repairs and replacements with Terminal manager or leadership at the site.
- Learn daily responsibilities for being a backup to the Production and Maintenance Supervisors during absences, ensuring smooth daily operations and workflow continuity.
- Collaborate with leadership team members to address operational issues and maintain productivity standards.
- Interacts and behaves professionally, following Lhoist corporate core principles of Courage, Respect and Integrity.
- Demonstrated ability to closely follow testing protocols and quality procedures, and reporting results.
- Familiarity with Quality Management systems and understanding of the application to manufacturing processes.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Good critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Good numerical skills in order to report results.
- Self-motivated and must be able to work independently.
- Demonstrated skills entering, retrieving and manipulating data in a Quality Management System and Microsoft based computer system.
- Must be physically able to perform work assigned.
- Must be physically capable of accessing all plant locations.
- Access all areas within a site which could include heights of 150 feet, confined spaces, climbing ladders or stairs, and accessing tunnels.
- Will be working at times in covered environment but mainly in a lime/mineral environment.
- The employee will be exposed to the following working conditions: Extreme Heat and Cold, Noise, Vibration, Oils, and Atmospheric Conditions such as Dust, Fumes, and Lime/Mineral Particles.
- The employee will be required to perform the following actions (from time to time): Standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing and sitting.
- Ability to lift/carry up to 10 pounds.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Associate degree or bachelor's degree in chemistry or other science-based degree program, and/or combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of one (1) year of quality or laboratory experience.
- Experience working in a heavy industrial setting is a plus.
