This year-round position offers the opportunity to engage with the public, lead educational tours and weekly activities, support program curriculum, and assist with publicity and communications. With a flexible schedule of up to 20 hours per week, you may work weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Schedules are planned a month in advance to help provide flexibility.
Most hours are scheduled during the school year, with opportunities to participate in special City events, including Memorial Day and Fourth of July activities.

This is a temporary position with no benefits assigned. After ninety (90) days of consistent employment, forty (40) hours of sick leave are assigned to a sick leave accrual bank, not to exceed eighty (80) hours.
Under general supervision, provides leadership and functional direction to a recreation program, activity, facility or service; directs and/or leads the activities of a program, activity or service; organizes and implements program elements and oversees participants, and performs related work as required. Receives direct or general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May exercise technical and functional direction and provide training to lower-level staff. This is a journey-level class utilized in the Parks and Community Services Department. Positions are filled on a seasonal or program-specific basis. The class is distinguished from the entry-level class positions by responsibility for on-site coordination of a specific program area.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only)
- Supervises staff and trains volunteers that support special events and educational programs;
- Oversees, plans, and/or directs daily Farm Education program activities.
- Analyzes facility and program needs and recommends new and innovative program ideas.
- Plans and prepares weekly weekend programs in alignment with historic and farm life activities.
- Creates planting schedule for organic garden and organizes schedule with garden volunteers
- Provides feedback regarding program goals and objectives, budget development and activity schedules.
- Develops and distributes promotional and marketing information.
- Assists the public with questions and problems.
- Opens, closes, secures and maintains a safe program environment and facility; and conducts safety checks.
- Maintains records and prepares reports, as necessary.
- Attends mandatory pre-service and in-service trainings and meetings.
- Administers first aid as required; handles emergency or extraordinary situations by notifying the proper authority or responder.
- Reports incidents/accidents.
- Serves as the primary point of contact in regard to accidents and incidents that occur during program hours and completes required reports.
- Uses Standard office practices and procedures, including the use of standard office equipment, basic recordkeeping, arithmetic, and computer applications related to the work.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Techniques for leading and overseeing daily program participants and activities.
- Practices for supervising and training Recreation Leaders and volunteers.
- Safety principles and practices, including basic first aid and adult and/or child CPR.
- Basic safety precautions and procedures related to recreation programs and facilities.
- Standard office practices and procedures, including:
- Use of standard office equipment.
- Basic recordkeeping and arithmetic.
- Computer applications related to the work.
- Safe work practices, including safe driving rules and procedures.
- Proper English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
- Techniques for effectively interacting with individuals of various ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and ethnic groups.
- Techniques for effectively representing the City when interacting with the public.
- Customer service techniques for providing a high level of service and effectively working with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
Ability to:
- Work independently while supervising facilities and program participants.
- Understand and follow facility use policies and procedures.
- Provide courteous and helpful assistance to facility patrons.
- Set up and arrange facilities for community events and meetings.
- Operate basic computer systems to enter and retrieve information for class registration and facility reservations.
- Remain flexible and adapt to changing job responsibilities and priorities.
- Respond calmly and effectively to medical emergencies and injuries, including providing basic first aid and adult and/or child CPR.
- Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure condition.
- Operate standard office equipment, computers, and related software.
- Perform accurate basic arithmetic calculations.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance.
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written documentation of work performed.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Organize work, set priorities, and meet important deadlines.
- Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, including in person and over the telephone.
- Exercise tact, initiative, good judgment, and sound decision-making within established policies, procedures, and legal guidelines.
- Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with coworkers, the public, vendors, contractors, and others encountered during the course of work.
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be Education Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. AND Experience Two (2) years full-time experience or its equivalent of recreation experience relevant to the area of assignment.
- Appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting including documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years is required upon hire.
Licenses and Certifications: At the option of the City, persons hired into this class may be required to either possess at entry or obtain within specified time limits designated licenses, certificates or specialized education and training relevant to the area of assignment. Additional requirements may include, but are not limited to:
- California Class C Driver's License
- First Aid and CPR/AED certifications
