School Security Officer

The School Security Officer (SSO) is an individual who is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in his/her assigned school. The School Security Officer must comply with requirements set out in the Virginia Administrative Code, Title 6, Agency 20, Chapter 240: Regulations for School Security Officers.

The SSO is an individual employed by the Southampton County School Board to:

• Maintain order and discipline
• Prevent crime
• Investigate violations of school board policies
• Detain students violating the law or school board policies on school property or at school-sponsored events
• Performs other duties as assigned

General knowledge of practices concerning the protection of school buildings and grounds; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to recognize and identify activities or situations requiring immediate attention. Must have the ability to think and act quickly, effectively, and responsibly during emergencies.

Dependability, professionalism, thoroughness, leadership, organizational, and communication skills are necessary.

Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers, and administrators and the ability to interact with school visitors and community members with courtesy and professionalism. Must be able to write reports, operate a computer and smartphone device.

High school graduate or GED required. Two years of college with course work in law enforcement and experience in law enforcement or security field, preferred. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to regularly stand; sit; walk; crawl, bend, climb, talk; and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 lbs. • Possession of a valid driver's license
• Must be at least twenty-one (21) years-of-age
• Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position
• Must complete and maintain the following training and certifications o Basic First Aid, AED, and CPR Training o Virginia School Security Officer Certification

• Non Exempt
• Full Time 12 Months or
• Part-Time 10 Months
