Neurology Clinic - Staff Nurse (Stroke/General/NIS/Cognitive)

Staff Nurse

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Neurology is looking for a full-time Staff Nurse to provide excellent patient care in the Neurology Outpatient Clinic. The Staff Nurse will focus primarily on the General/Stroke/Cognitive/Neurointerventional Surgery (NIS) patient population and will assess those patients' nursing care needs, evaluate effectiveness of care provided, and provide leadership to members of the nursing team.

As part of the care team, the Staff Nurse may also assist with additional patient populations as needs arise. Patient diagnoses may include movement, central nervous system (CNS) autoimmune diseases, epilepsy, and headache.

Job duties include incorporating scientific, behavioral and humanistic principles for application to clinical practice, utilizing departmental standards and practice guidelines, applying nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness, assessing patient health care preferences and expectations, collaboratively coordinating the continuum of care across settings, developing patient care plan based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes, implementing patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses, collaborating and integrating contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan, developing, coordinating and implementing transfer/discharge planning throughout episode of care, implementing nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors and staff, following universal precautions, implementing emergency care procedures in potential or actual emergencies according to departmental policies, procedures and protocols, maintaining skills/competency related to special equipment, medications, and procedures common to the patient population of the unit/division, evaluating patient's response to multidisciplinary care, using evaluation data to revise and implement change, assuming accountability for the provision of care for patients, assuming responsibility for care provided by self and other staff members under the nurse's direction, evaluating the quality of nursing care provided by other staff members, participating as a member of the health care team utilizing effective communication skills, participating in the development of unit, division, department and hospital policies, procedures and protocols, contributing to the solutions of staffing issues, contributing to cost containment strategies in unit, participating in projects/committees for enhanced functioning of the unit and supports unit level decision-making, responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of an interdisciplinary plan of care, participating in ongoing strategic planning process, participating in the development and implementation of computer applications, performing other projects or tasks as assigned, developing and implementing patient/family teaching plan based on identified health education needs and the condition and age of the patient, evaluating and documenting effectiveness of patient/family teaching, revising plan of care, participating in the orientation of new nursing staff and the ongoing education of nursing personnel, as directed by the Nurse Manager or designee, participating in formal and informal teaching with health care students, serving as clinical teaching assistant for senior level nursing students as directed by the Nurse Manager or designee, participating in research utilization activities, integrating research findings into practice, applying quality improvement principals to improve patient outcomes, participating in quality improvement activities, responsible for identification of improvement opportunities, functioning as a patient advocate, incorporating the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations, maintaining confidentiality, practicing within legal boundaries of the Nurse Practice Act, complying with personnel policies, evaluating and validating performance with Nurse Manager or designee and sets goals for work performance, committing to ongoing learning to maintain and expand own knowledge, participating in professional development activities, demonstrating effective interpersonal and communication skills, remaining calm and constructive in conflict situations, providing recognition and support for colleagues, incorporating the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations, adhering to UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, including: follows established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors and meeting the standards of personal appearance, attendance and punctuality, and pre-operative patient education and surgical planning.

Pay Grade: 6 -

Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: 8:30am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday. This position will participate in the late rotation, including one closing shift per week, to ensure patient care needs are met prior to and at clinic close. No call, no weekends, and no holidays.

Required Qualifications

• An Associate's Degree, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader, or a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA)
• Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

• Minimum of 1-year inpatient nursing experience
• Experience working with Neuroscience patient population
• Ambulatory Nursing experience
• Nursing Certification
