JOB TYPE: Full-time , 30-35 hours a week

DEPARTMENT:  School-Based Programming, Middle School and High School

EXEMPTION:  Non-exempt 

REPORTS TO:  Program Director 

SUPERVISES: N/A

WEEKLY HOURS:  Between 10:30 am –6:30 pm (hours subject to change around special events and performances)

WHO WE ARE

Center for Family Life in Sunset Park (CFL) ( is a nationally recognized social service organization. CFL's mission is to promote positive outcomes for children and adults in Sunset Park, Brooklyn by providing a comprehensive range of neighborhood-based family and social services. This role is part of the Life Lines Community Arts Project, which has a long history of facilitating high-quality community-based art-making with adolescent youth in our vibrant neighborhood.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION/ SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:  The Dance Teaching Artist’s role focuses on creating and facilitating meaningful dance activities and experiences for middle and high school-aged youth. The Dance Teaching Artist will design and implement age-appropriate dance activities in various styles, for a variety of skills levels and will choreograph dances for performances throughout the year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to

• Design age-appropriate, standards-based dance curricula for groups of middle and/or high school age youth in school day, afterschool and summer programs
• Provide instruction in a range of dance styles, choreograph dance pieces, and lead weekly dance activities for middle school and high school student groups
• Collaborate with participants to make dance pieces and original material to be showcased in performances for the program, school, and/or community throughout the year
• Choreograph, direct, and collaborate with colleagues to produce 3 annual program-wide performances, including an original production that brings to life the struggles and vitality of our diverse community as well as two productions adapted from middle grade and children’s literature.
  • The creation of the original production includes staff attendance on overnight cabin-based camping trips with youth which provide opportunities for rehearsals and community building.
• Collaborate with other teaching artists on other interdisciplinary projects, some of which take place during school-day time in partnership with DOE staff.
• Work as part of a diverse staff team to contribute to the overall supervision of the after-school and in-school program, the planning and execution of special events, staff development training, and other community-building activities, outside of the realm of dance instruction.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Education/Degree minimum requirement: Bachelor’s Degree or at least 4 years of experience as a dance instructor
• Experience working with middle school and high school students
• Has a strong dance background in a variety of dance styles and techniques
• Can use the medium of dance to promote self-expression, skill development in performing arts, social-emotional learning, and community-building, and is interested in learning about and working in a social group work model
• Demonstrates a commitment to promoting dance for all, is interested in working with students with a varying level of dance skills and getting students excited about dance
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
• Flexibility and the ability to work well as a member of a team of different disciplines (artists, social workers, teachers, young-adult staff)
• Interested in managing and creating positive experiences for diverse groups, including participants with disabilities and participants with behavior challenges
• Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and medical clearance, which will be conducted after a conditional offer is made and accepted
• Bilingual: English/Mandarin/Cantonese or English/Spanish, preferred

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS

• Build and maintain close, daily interactions with participants, co-workers, and supervisors
• Participate in professional development, supervision, and team meetings where use of self and relationships with others are explored
  • Trainings happen regularly and include such topics as self-awareness, use of authority, and best practices when working with youth and young staff
• Collaborate artistically with other specialists and supervisory staff
• Have a strong sensitivity to cultural differences present among staff and participants within our organization.
• Possess a strong belief in people’s ability to grow and change
• Forge a mutually respectful partnership with the people served and their families
• Maintain professional contact as needed with participants’ families, school personnel, and external community groups who co-existing the same space.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Actively engage and interact with children each day
• Physically active and high energy level position that includes walking, dancing, bending, standing, squatting or sitting on the floor with children
• May include occasional late nights or weekend shifts around show preparations
• May be exposed to all weather conditions and might be required to work in various temperatures in order to facilitate activities in various locations inside and outside of the school building

WORK SCHEDULE

This is a Full-Time position at 30-35 hours per week.

COMPENSATION $21.43-$30.00 per hour ($39,000 - $54,600 per year) 

Dependent on experience and education level as well as number of hours of work scheduled, between 30-35
