Psychiatric Technician Location: Western Mental Health Institute, Hardsman County, Tennessee. Overview Under general supervision, provides direct patient care in a psychiatric hospital. Responsibilities include daily living care, individualized teaching, group activities, medical assistance, clerical duties related to admissions, documentation, scheduling, and unit operations. May work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Requires completion of an approved Psychiatric Technician training course with the State of Tennessee or passing an equivalent examination. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. A valid motor vehicle operator license; some positions may require a FOR HIRE (F) endorsement. Responsibilities Provide basic or emergency psychiatric medical assistance under supervision, rescue injured patients, and escort them during emergencies. Teach patients to function at the highest daily living level through instruction, videos, or booklets; encourage social interaction and group participation. Identify patients at risk and follow protocols; monitor medication and meal administration; ensure supplies are adequate. Address problematic interactions, intervene when staff have difficulties, and restrain patients to prevent injuries. Report observed progress or regression, document patient behavior and hospital situations, and meet with staff for discussion. Clean work areas, supplies, and equipment; inspect patient rooms and belongings for contraband or safety issues. Perform clerical tasks such as completing forms, entering data, maintaining records, processing admissions, answering phones, and explaining HIPAA laws and patient rights. Maintain HIPAA compliance, attend annual and periodic in‑service training, and stay updated on relevant methods and technologies.
