Registered Nurse - Critical Care

Summary The VA Puget Sound Health Care System is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) team. Qualifications English Language Proficiency – in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency (ACEN or CCNE). Bi‑annual bridge program pathways for master’s level bridge program students eligible for licensure prior to graduation. Upon achievement of a State license, temporary appointment may be granted with conversion to a permanent appointment after successful completion of the bridge program. Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing must possess current, full, active and unrestricted registration and a formal degree‑equivalency validation from a recognized evaluation accepted by VA. Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (including Puerto Rico) or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: candidates who meet educational requirements but lack licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education on a 120‑day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis). Grandfathering Provision – All persons currently employed in VHA 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification. Grade/Level Scope: Nurse I, II, III – detailed education and experience requirements are provided in the online assessment. Preferred experience: Minimum of 1–2 years critical care experience and National Certification as a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN). *Note: Foreign education programs and degrees are not creditable as related degrees. Duties Providing direct care for acutely/critically ill patients who are at high risk for actual or potential life‑threatening health problems. Providing high‑intensity care and vigilance utilizing assessment skills and blending data from a variety of invasive/non‑invasive monitoring technology. Establishing a therapeutic relationship to allow the patient to attain, maintain or regain optimal function through assessment and treatment. Engaging patients, families and other caregivers to incorporate knowledge, values and beliefs into care planning without judgement or discrimination. Participating in unit‑based educational activities and continuing education requirements. Demonstrating positive, effective communication skills and professional behaviours that promote cooperation and teamwork with internal and external customers. Applying evidence‑based practice/research to patient care. Participating in unit‑based activities to improve and deliver cost‑effective patient care. Demonstrating knowledge of specific unit‑level performance improvement activities. Incorporating patient preferences into shared care delivery decisions. The EDRP requires submission of the application within four months of the start date and eligibility is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office.
