Security Officer 3
Security Officer 3 will perform their duties, in a manner to provide a safe and secure environment for learning to take place. They will, to their utmost ability, keep the peace, and protect all members of the campus community. They will provide efficient and courteous service to everyone who works, learns, or visits the campus.
NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance.
Essential Functions
- Protect students, staff, and visitors, up to and including the possibility of an armed intruder or individual intent on harm in the building, or on grounds.
- Keep the peace
- Patrol interior of buildings, and exterior grounds to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, illegal entry/trespass, disturbances
- Control access to all school facilities and grounds at entry points
- Lock, unlock, and check doors within the facility
- Check student hall passes, and keep hallways clear during class time to foster a quiet, peaceful learning environment
- Monitor cafeteria, assemblies, or events with large number of individuals in attendance
- Write reports and statements, submit behavior referrals as related to security and peace keeping duties
- Understand and abide by Security Department Rules and Regulations, as well as Board of Education policy
- Understand, and be able to implement, or assist in the implementation of the emergency plan
- Assist with situations wherein students, staff, or officers are in danger, or the situations themselves are inherently dangerous
- Assist during emergency safety drills (Fire, Weather, Active Shooter)
- Keep the peace by stopping, intervening, or assisting when disturbances, fights, or distractions occur on school property
- Use of force in compliance with policy
- Direct traffic and monitor parking on school property
- Assist in medical emergencies
- Assist safety services (Police and Fire)
- Provide security services at after school, or outside events and functions related to school activities
- Challenge and attempt to identify individuals suspected to be involved in criminal activity.
- Activate fire alarms in the event of a fire, and aid with extinguishing
- Effectively communicate and operate a two radio
- Call Police or Fire services to respond in an emergency. Be able to relay required information
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Officers will place an emphasis on de escalation when safe, appropriate, and possible to do so.
Officers will exhibit a positive, helpful, and customer service oriented demeanor.
Officers may be subject to order in due to scheduling emergencies, and may be subject to work any time during a twenty four hour time period should it be deemed necessary.
Officers will be required to work special events, and may be required to work on Holidays.
Officers will be required to attend continuing education and training as designated by human resources and the security director to include, but not specifically be limited to:
- Public school works CPR/AED training
- Defensive tactics
- In service trainings
- Range qualifications and training
- Job related training and classes held within the district, or at an off site location
- Officers will attnd all scheduled in service trainings
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Drivers License
- Valid OPOTA Private Security Certificate, OPOTA Corrections Certificate, or
- Valid OPOTA Basic Peace officers Certificate (Police Officer) or equivalent.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Officers must possess the ability to clearly communicate verbally, in person, on the phone, or via two way radio
- Officers must have the ability to maintain confidentiality of student contacts, reports, and investigatory information
- Officers must have the skill to work with children that is acceptable to the board of education, and community standards
- Officers must possess the ability to work in a team environment with other officers, administrators, and staff
- Officers must have computer skill, and the ability to learn to operate computer software and operating systems
- Officers must have the ability to communicate clearly in writing
- Officers must have the ability to patiently deal with children
- Officers must have the ability to work unsupervised

Additional Working Conditions
- Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids, tissue
- Occasional operation of a motor vehicle, in all types of weather
- Occasional weekends, nights, or other variations of primary work schedule
- Occasional lifting up to 20 pounds
- Frequent requirement to walk and stand, talk, hear, see, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, climb, balance, kneel, stoop, and run
- Occasional requirement to restrain or use physical force
- Occasional requirement to work in excess of normally scheduled hours
- Occasional requirement to work special events
- Occasional requirement to travel, daily, at night, or overnight
- Occasional requirement for repetitive hand motion, such as, but not limited to, computer operation, handwriting, directing traffic, etc
Required Testing Certificates Pre-Employment Physical O.P.O.T.C. certificate or equivalent
Clearances Fingerprint/Background Clearance
Continuing Educ./Training Officers will be required to attend continuing education and training as designated by human resources and the security director to include, but not specifically be limited to :
- Public School Works annually as directed by BOE
- CPR/AED certification
- Self Defense/Pepper Spray Refresher
- In service trainings
- Range qualifications and training
- Job related training and classes held within the district, or at an off site location
- Officers will attnd all scheduled in service trainings
Evaluation Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions in the Board of Education policy regarding evaluation of support and staff personnel.
Based on performance evaluations, or disciplinary action, performance improvement plan may be implemented to correct or improve performance.
