Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist - General Radiologic Technology

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Duties Perform radiographic procedures and examinations in the Radiology service – inpatient floors or clinics – under the direction of radiologists and other medical officers to produce studies used for medical diagnosis. Prepare and administer contrast media and medications in accordance with state and federal regulations. Perform complicated radiographic examinations and routine studies such as head, chest, extremities, abdominal, fluoroscopy, C‑arm, and bone densitometry. Explain procedures to patients, position patients, set technical factors and exposure parameters, and operate equipment to obtain clear images. Prepare contrast materials for exams requiring injectable solutions (e.g., IVP, cystogram, cholangiogram, fistulagram, arthrography) and for oral/rectal studies of the GI tract. Obtain written consent for procedures requiring injected media when indicated. Utilize safe working practices when lifting patients or supplies and use proper judgment to avoid unnecessary injury. Apply quality control techniques and ensure examinations are properly archived. Monitor all radiology equipment for proper operation, make minor adjustments, and report malfunctions to the supervisor. Maintain records of patients examined, studies performed, images taken, and technical factors used, ensuring proper archival into PACS. Contribute accurate statistical input to departmental data collection for strategic planning. Participate in on‑the‑job training of radiologic technologist trainees assigned to the VA through affiliated teaching programs. Keep work areas clean, orderly, and stocked with supplies; maintain a professional appearance in dress and habits. Stay current with new developments in allied health sciences related to radiologic technology. Use time efficiently to meet the required number of procedures and reduce patient wait times without compromising quality standards. Explain exams to patients in understandable terms and discuss potential hazards. Monitor vital signs when required by procedure or patient condition, recognize allergic reactions, and initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation if needed. Practice radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff, and oneself, using lead aprons, gloves, shields, and appropriate collimation and shielding. Wear film badges in compliance with radiation regulations. Adhere to safety policies and procedures of the Medical Center and participate in quality assurance activities as directed. Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Benefits Competitive salary with regular salary increases. 37–50 days of annual paid time off (13–26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays). Parental leave: up to 12 weeks of paid leave after 12 months of employment for birth, adoption, or foster placement. Child care subsidy: after 60 days of employment, full‑time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may receive up to 25% of eligible childcare costs (up to a monthly maximum of $416.66). Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution. Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance (many programs may be carried into retirement). No telework or virtual option.
