Position Summary Extended Recovery RN is responsible for providing high‑quality patient‑centered care to post‑operative orthopedic patients requiring extended recovery or overnight care. The role involves monitoring patient conditions, managing pain, preventing complications, encouraging early mobility, preparing patients for discharge home, and ensuring a safe recovery process. The nurse works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, hospitalists, nurse navigators, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes and maintain safety standards. Requirements Education : Graduate of an accredited school/college of nursing required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Licensure : Registered Nursing licensed in the State of Nebraska or eligible compact state. Certification : Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) to be acquired within 90 days of hire. Experience : 1+ years of RN experience preferred. Knowledge/Skills : Strong knowledge of post‑operative orthopedic care, pain management, and mobility assistance. Proficiency in IV therapy, wound care, patient assessment, and vital sign monitoring. Ability to recognize and respond to complications including respiratory distress and infection. Excellent communication and patient education skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment. Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and documentation. Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills. Must pass background check, pre‑employment physical, and drug screening. Job offer contingent on successful completion. Essential Job Functions Monitor vital signs, pain levels, and overall patient condition. Administer medications including pain management protocols. Assist patients with mobility ensuring safety and adherence to post‑op restrictions. Identify signs of post‑operative complications and intervene appropriately. Provide wound care, monitor for infections, and manage post‑anesthesia side effects. Initiate action to correct, prevent, and/or minimize risks to patients, families, or hospital employees. Maintain accurate and timely medical records. Communicate effectively with patients and families, addressing concerns and providing education about recovery expectations. Maintain professional behavior, demeanor, and interactions across departments. Comply with safety activities, policies and procedures, regulatory requirements such as OSHA and The Joint Commission. Adhere to HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality. Follow established guidelines as stated in hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Assist in onboarding and training new nursing staff. Perform other duties as assigned for which competency has been demonstrated. Physical Requirements This position is classified as Medium Work. Requires exertion of 20–50 pounds of force occasionally, 10–25 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds constantly. Physical demands exceed those of Light Work.
