Director, Emergency Department (ED)

The Emergency Department Director at Sentara Leigh Hospital is accountable for the 24/7 daily operations, clinical effectiveness, strategic planning, and budget management of the emergency unit. The Director leads a team of ER nurses, technicians, and support staff to ensure high-quality, efficient patient care aligned with Sentara Healthcares mission.

Operational Leadership: Oversee daily ED operations, patient flow, and throughput to maintain target wait times and short lengths of stay.

Quality & Patient Safety: Partner with hospital leadership to implement evidence-based practices that improve clinical outcomes, regulatory compliance, and patient satisfaction.

Staff Mentorship: Mentor, recruit, and retain clinical staff by modeling a professional practice environment.

Financial Management: Develop, monitor, and manage the departmental budget, including purchasing, payroll, and resource utilization.

Community & Emergency Services: Coordinate care for urgent and emergent cases, including supporting the Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance landing pad on campus.

Education: Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Masters degree preferred.

License: Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Experience: Minimum of 3 to 5 years of acute care nursing experience, with significant leadership and supervisory experience in an Emergency Department setting.

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
