Metallurgical Engineer

Responsibilities Primary Purpose of Job Under the SAIP Senior Metallurgist, this position is responsible for providing technical support for the creation of new processes /new items, optimizing existing processes to improve properties and reduce cost/lead time, reviewing process deviations to disposition product, responding to customer requests, writing and reviewing technical documents, writing technical reports to qualify new product/processes, reviewing technical specifications for compliance, and supporting industry (AS9100, NADCAP, etc), supplier and customer audits in order to meet Howmet's business objectives. This position does not directly supervise other personnel. The incumbent communicates with all levels of management within the Operations, Supply Chain & Logistics, and Commercial Departments, as well as with other Quality and Metallurgical personnel. Externally, they communicate with customers, external auditors and suppliers. Accountability Objectives Reviewing test release and supplier certification results to ensure the achievement of production goals. Providing technical expertise to the metallographic analysis of the material and processes of Howmet Products. Determining the acceptability of structural features of metallographic samples from production forgings. Communicating and creating new part qualifications and necessary technical requirements, including review and implementation of customer specification flow down, and preparing documentation for customer qualification approval to ensure on‑time delivery. Maintaining and updating manufacturing and technology instruction manuals. Converting, translating, and communicating specified customer requirements to Production and other Technical Design, Quality and Process Engineering staff, evaluating test results against customer requirements. Implementing continuous improvement and stability activities for critical processes. Developing and maintaining Quality Assurance programs, specifications, procedures, and equipment to meet customer specifications and Howmet quality requirements. Auditing internal and external processes to these requirements. Interfacing with customer representatives on Howmet product and metallurgical quality issues. Interfacing with outside suppliers to monitor changes in stated requirements to ensure compliance and performing on‑site audits at suppliers as needed. Assisting the Chief Metallurgist in material and process development programs. Working in conjunction with, guiding and supporting Production teams to meet on‑time delivery requirements and schedules. Supporting continuous customer and industry audits, in addition to all quality system certifications. Creating and providing training to operators in specialized positions such as thermal processing and final inspection. Performing other duties as assigned. Basic Qualifications For this position to be successful, the incumbent should have a Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, or Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution, or a minimum 8 years of metallurgical manufacturing experience in aluminum, titanium, steel, or nickel‑base wrought products. ITAR: This position is subject to ITAR which requires US Person status (U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident, Political Asylee, or Refugee). Preferred Qualifications Experience with review and documentation of customer/industry technical specifications and audits. Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to delegate while maintaining forward motion on key deliverables; strong technical writing skills are highly preferred. High degree of interpersonal skills to motivate and influence others, including those not directly supervised. Demonstrated ability of problem solving, systems thinking, project management, and team building. Ability to work in a fast‑paced, multiple deadline‑oriented work environment. Experience with Excel macros and advanced formatting. Experience with Oracle. Working Conditions This position involves moderate exposure to risk of accident and requires following basic safety precautions. Work is normally performed in an interior work environment. While not exposed to hazardous materials, this position requires wearing full PPE to protect from mobile equipment and hot materials when on the shop floor. This position requires light physical activity, such as walking, sitting, and standing for extended periods of time, as well as some lifting. This position also requires a willingness to be responsive outside of normal working hours for support and travel domestically, as requested.
