Job Title: Dental Laboratory Technician
Location: 22d Medical Group (MDG), McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas, 67221
Duration: Up to 5 years - initial 1-year contract, with annual extensions for up to 5 years, subject to performance and client requirements.
Work Schedule: 0700 - 1700, Monday - Friday with a 1 hour lunch period. Position Summary
The Dental Laboratory Technician provides comprehensive dental laboratory support services within a Military Treatment Facility (MTF) at McConnell Air Force Base. The incumbent will fabricate, repair, and maintain a wide range of dental prosthetics and appliances while supporting clinical operations, logistics management, inventory control, and quality assurance activities. The position requires technical expertise in dental laboratory procedures, strict adherence to military healthcare standards, and the ability to work collaboratively with dental providers and external laboratory partners.
Key Responsibilities
Core Functional Duties (By Specialty Section)
The Dental Laboratory Technician shall perform duties within their assigned specialty section as outlined below. Regardless of section, all technicians are responsible for the strict maintenance, hygiene, and organization of their assigned work environment.
A. General Requirements (Applicable to All Technicians)

• Prescription Interpretation: Read, interpret, and execute all technical requirements prescribed and described within DD Form 2322 (Dental Prosthetic Prescription) .
• Microscopic Precision: Fabricate all units under provided microscopic magnification utilizing fiber optic light sources to meet the rigid standards of quality control inspectors.
• Quality Standard: Maintain a monthly remake/correction rate of 5% or less on an annual average. Exceeding a 5% monthly correction rate for three (3) consecutive months shall constitute unsatisfactory performance.

B. General Laboratory Section

• Casts & Impressions: Pour, cast, trim, duplicate, mount, and articulate all types of dental impressions. Articulate casts with or without a face bow and jaw relation records (to include precise orthodontic models).
• Thermoplastic Fabrication: Fabricate custom impression trays, bleaching trays, athletic mouthguards, and orthodontic retainers utilizing thermoplastic materials.
• Templates & Guides: Fabricate fixed and removable prosthodontic templates from thermoplastic or silicone materials, and construct surgical stents or guides from thermoplastic or light-cured materials.
• Area Maintenance: Maintain the absolute cleanliness and sanitation of the plaster bench and all associated laboratory processing areas.

C. Removable Prosthodontics Section

• Denture Fabrication: Fabricate custom trays, base plates, and occlusion rims. Set denture teeth according to the prescription (including balanced set-ups).
• Processing & Finishing: Invest, flask, pack, cure, deflask, and finish complete and partial removable prostheses (to include flexible Removable Partial Dentures [RPDs]) to a polished state ready for immediate clinical insertion.
• Repairs & Relines: Perform complex denture relines, rebases, repairs, orthodontic retainers, and any other work prescribed utilizing acrylic resins.
• Specialty Appliances: Fabricate Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) / TAP appliances, surgical guides, athletic mouthguards, occlusal orthotics, and occlusal guards. Wax and design custom bars for implant-supported restorations.

D. Porcelain Application Section (Ceramist)

• Esthetics & Characterization: Apply colorants, stains, modifiers, and porcelain to fabricate tooth-supported or implant-supported crowns, fixed partial dentures (bridges), and fixed complete dentures.
• Material Utilization: Work expertly with metals, milled/pressed ceramics, and refractory models in accordance with written or photographic instructions from the prescribing dentist.
• Sculpting & Contour: Utilize recommended stones, diamond burs, wheels, and disks to cut, carve, shape, contour, and polish units to realistically simulate natural dentition, shade, and natural imperfections.
• Framework Modification: Modify metal or ceramic substructures/frameworks to optimize the biomechanical, functional, and esthetic outcome of the final prosthesis.

E. Prosthesis Finishing Section

• Anatomical Waxing: Apply and sculpt wax to correct anatomical form. Design or modify metal-ceramic frameworks to properly support porcelain application.
• Diagnostic Design: Perform diagnostic wax-ups to full contour and execute cutback designs when clinically indicated. Integrate survey crowns, non-rigid connectors, and precision attachments into framework designs.
• Casting & Soldering: Properly sprue, invest, cast, or press wax-ups to minimize miscasts. Cut, align, and solder frameworks to correct clinical fit discrepancies.
• Surface Preparation: Finish all framework types with recommended stones, diamond burs, wheels, and disks to prepare the metal/ceramic surface for porcelain application without requiring further modifications.

F. CAD-CAM Milling and Design Section

• Digital Fabrication: Fabricate high-precision crowns and bridges from pressed or milled ceramics.
• Software & Hardware Systems: Operate digital dental software and laboratory hardware to upload digital impressions, scan physical stone casts, and manipulate CAD software to design and mill anatomical restorations.

Required Qualifications
Education
Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

• Associate Degree or Professional Certificate from an accredited Dental Laboratory Technology Program; OR
• Graduate Certificate from the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) Dental Laboratory Training Program; OR
• High School Diploma/GED with a minimum of two (2) years of documented active-duty military dental laboratory technician experience.

Professional Experience

• Minimum two (2) years of hands-on dental laboratory experience within the last three (3) years.
• Experience fabricating dental prosthetics, crowns, bridges, dentures, retainers, and orthodontic appliances.
• Experience working in a dental laboratory environment with dental impressions, models, and restorative appliances.

Certifications

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.

Technical Skills

• Knowledge of dental laboratory materials, equipment, and fabrication techniques.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to use Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and other computerized healthcare applications.
• Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
• Effective communication and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting military or government healthcare facilities.
• Knowledge of CAD/CAM dental technology and digital dental workflows.
• Experience with removable and fixed prosthodontics.
• Familiarity with military medical documentation and compliance standards.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit and work at a laboratory bench for extended periods.
• Ability to perform precise and detailed handwork.
• Ability to safely handle laboratory materials and equipment.
• Compliance with all occupational health, immunization, and tuberculosis screening requirements
