Career Transfer Counselor, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI)

Position at Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute, Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), Department of the Interior (DOI). A Career/Transfer Counselor (GS‑1740‑11) responsible for providing and improving career and transfer services and resources to students in today’s global market. Location: Albuquerque, NM Salary: $75,489 – $98,141 per year (GS‑11) Term: Not to exceed 2 years; may be extended to 4 years. Work schedule: Full‑time; occasional travel required. Responsibilities Provide onboarding services for college navigation, student engagement, and student support services. Advise on pathways and transfer from high school into postsecondary and from postsecondary to four‑year colleges/universities. Assist students with employment, job search, placement, and job‑opening databases. Collect, organize, and analyze outcomes for career and transition services relative to guided pathways and strategic plans. Build internal and external partnerships to support student employment and internships. Support academic programs in integrated advisement, guided pathways, retention, and completion to promote continuous improvement. Conditions of Employment U.S. citizenship required. A background security investigation and successful adjudication required. 2‑year trial/1‑year probationary period; fitness assessed during this period. Selected candidates who are male, born after 12/31/1959, must register under the Military Selective Service Act. Valid driver’s license required if duty includes operating a motor vehicle. Term appointment. Not a permanent position. Qualifications Basic Requirements Academic coursework totaling at least 24 semester hours in areas such as tests and measurement, adult education, educational program administration, curriculum development, teaching methods, guidance and counseling, career planning, or occupational information. For guidance counselor positions, a college or university–sponsored practicum in counseling is required. Minimum Qualifications Specialized Experience: At least 1 year of experience equivalent to GS‑9, OR 3 years of graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent, OR a combination of experience and graduate education that meets 100 % of the total requirements. Experience must be in or related to the duties of the position.
