Overview POLICE OFFICER 2214 (Revised 08/06/25) Salary: $91,224.00 - $124,236.00 Annually Location: CITY OF LOS ANGELES, CA Job Type: FULL-TIME Job Number: 2214 O 2025/07/11 Department: LAPD - Sworn Closing Date: Continuous Duties As a sworn member of the Los Angeles Police Department, a Police Officer maintains order, enforces laws and ordinances, and protects life and property; works with neighborhood associations and community members as a planner, community organizer, problem solver and information link; issues citations, makes arrests, prepares reports, and provides information to the public and departmental units; and does related work. NOTE: Salary range applies to Police Officer I & II. Annual salary is at the start of the pay range. The current salary range is subject to change. Please confirm the starting salary with the hiring department before accepting a job offer. Check for details. Requirements / Minimum Qualifications At least 20 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age by police academy graduation. Graduation from a U.S. high school, G.E.D. or equivalent from a U.S. institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate is required. A two or four year college degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution may be substituted for the high school requirements. Documentation demonstrating that the institution is accredited must be submitted prior to taking the written test. Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law. * A valid Class C driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles is required at the time of appointment. Candidates will not be eligible for appointment if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI. Because this class has been designated as Safety Sensitive in accordance with City Policy, a drug and alcohol screening test may be required prior to appointment and during employment. Selection Process Examination Weight: Multiple-Choice Test; Personal History Statement; Interview. The examination includes a qualifying multiple-choice test, a qualifying Personal History Statement, and an interview. The multiple-choice test evaluates spelling, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and clarity. Your passing score does not expire. The test will be proctored and administered online; candidates may take it from a remote location with a computer, webcam, and reliable internet connection. FAQs for online testing are available at the provided City website. Only candidates who demonstrate a hardship may be offered the option to take the multiple-choice test onsite at a City facility. All candidates who receive a passing score on the Multiple-Choice Test will be invited to submit a Personal History Statement, which is a preliminary background investigation requiring extensive biographical information. Candidates who pass the Personal History Statement will be invited for an Interview. Competencies may include Personal Accomplishment; Job Motivation; Community Involvement/Awareness; Problem Solving Skills; Interpersonal Skills; and Oral Communication Skills. The interview score determines rank on the eligible list. The passing score expires after 2 years. The interview will be conducted online; candidates may join from a remote location with a webcam and reliable internet connection. City equipment may be offered for onsite interviews to those who demonstrate a hardship. Additional Job Information Background Investigation: Begins with a Personal History Statement and includes fingerprinting, a background interview, checks of employment, police, financial, education, and military records, and interviews with family members, neighbors, supervisors, coworkers, and friends. Findings are valid for 12 months. A polygraph examination will be conducted prior to the field investigation. Processing guidelines may be revised periodically. Candidates are processed according to current guidelines, not those in place at application. Convictions: Any felony conviction will result in disqualification. Federal law prohibits anyone convicted of a misdemeanor involving domestic violence from carrying a firearm. Physical Fitness Qualifier (PFQ): Complete the PFQ prior to medical evaluation. Score is advisory and valid for 12 months. Retakes are allowed; CAP participation is encouraged for success. If living far from Los Angeles, arrange a PFQ in town. Details at the CAP link. Medical Evaluation: Includes a City physician evaluation, possible cardiac stress test, and a psychological evaluation. Medical results are valid for up to 12 months. Psychological tests: written tests valid for up to 24 months; oral evaluation valid for 12 months. Health / Physical Condition: Must be in excellent health with appropriate body weight for height/build and able to perform duties. Vision: Requirements include specific acuity and color vision standards, with allowances for contact lenses or prior refractive surgery. Must name colors accurately and be free from impairments affecting duties. Certification and Appointment: Completion of all required steps is mandatory before hire. Academy Training: Six-month, 40-hour per week training and orientation with full pay. Assignments: 18-month probationary period; after Academy, assignments to one of 21 patrol divisions; early years in a patrol assignment with a Training Officer. Notes This examination is based on a validation study; the multiple-choice test is not subject to candidate inspection.
