The Director of Mission Investment & Communications essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Resource Development: Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive communications and resource development plan, in partnership with the Executive Director, Stewardship Team, Board Mission Investment Committee, and others, including: > Philanthropy: – Identify, cultivate, and solicit small and major donors, including maintaining donor lists; managing donor acknowledgments; promoting planned giving opportunities, annual giving programs, and activities and events to support community engagement and fundraising goals. – Ensure success by meeting established fundraising goals. o – Communicate fundraising goals throughout the organization and empower team members to participate in accomplishing Piedmont Housing Alliance’s annual fundraising goals. > Grant Writing: – Oversee identifying, writing, submitting, and reporting for grants from local, state, and federal government; private, corporate, and family foundations; and other philanthropic institutions. – Collaborate with internal departments to identify funding opportunities that advance organizational priorities. 2. Communications – Oversee internal and external communications through newsletters, the website, social media, advertising, media relations, and other communication channels that strengthen community engagement, fundraising opportunities, and organizational visibility. – Develop and publish the organization’s Annual Report. – Tell the story of Piedmont Housing Alliance by highlighting the organization’s impact, residents, programs, and mission. – Publish internal staff newsletters and organizational updates. – Ensure consistency in organizational messaging and branding across departments and communication channels. – Maintain awareness of emerging community issues and relevant trends to strengthen community engagement and position PHA as a trusted community partner. 3. Mission Investment – Serve as a thought leader in partnership with the Executive Director, Stewardship Team, and organization leadership. – Strengthen community support for Piedmont Housing Alliance through strategic partnerships, donor engagement, and community investment. – Foster meaningful engagement opportunities for donors, volunteers, community partners, and other stakeholders in support of PHA’s mission. – Act as leader and guide to the Board Mission Investment Committee and Board of Directors, including preparing agendas and reports and curating fundraising and engagement opportunities for Board participation. – Directly supervise the MIC team by providing leadership, coaching, performance management, and professional development. – Empower the team in executing the communications and resource development plan through innovative and creative approaches. – Partner with organizational leadership to strengthen cross-departmental collaboration and support organization-wide priorities. 5. Other Responsibilities – Assist with special projects as assigned and perform other duties deemed necessary to achieve overall organizational goals and operate a successful department. – Support additional projects and responsibilities as needed to help Piedmont Housing Alliance turn its mission and strategic framework into day-to-day practice so residents, clients, and staff experience supportive services, strong partnerships, and a community where people can thrive. – This position requires the ability to undertake occasional travel throughout Virginia, as well as occasional evening and weekend responsibilities. Job Duties The Director of Mission Investment & Communications serves as a strategic and collaborative leader, advancing Piedmont Housing Alliance’s mission through resource development, fundraising, communications, and community engagement. As a member of the Stewardship Team, this position plays a key leadership role in shaping organizational strategy, strengthening cross-departmental collaboration, and ensuring the Mission Investment & Communications (MIC) team effectively supports the broader goals and priorities of the organization. The Director is responsible for leading and developing a high-performing team that cultivates meaningful relationships with donors, funders, community partners, and stakeholders while overseeing comprehensive fundraising, communications, and grant strategies. Working collaboratively across departments and grounded in Piedmont Housing Alliance’s core values of home, justice, respect, hope, and community, this role ensures that resource development and communications efforts are aligned with organizational priorities, elevate PHA’s impact, and secure the resources necessary to sustain and advance its mission. Skills Required Piedmont Housing Alliance is looking for a dynamic and experienced fundraiser with a deep understanding of Charlottesville and its surrounding areas. – Minimum of five (5) years of related experience in fundraising and communications, including but not limited to Community Centric Fundraising. – Verifiable proof of fundraising abilities, with demonstrated success of achieving tangible fundraising outcomes in a competitive field. – A strong track record of building relationships in new communities which resulted in the cultivation of new donors. – Experience working in diverse communities with a clear understanding of multicultural contexts and racial equity practices. – Ability to focus simultaneously on both big-picture strategy and hands-on implementation. – Excellent oral and written communication skills with individuals at all levels – Strong working knowledge of fundraising and community engagement – Motivated to work in a results-oriented, industry-leading environment where expectations are high for quality and speed of work – Strong computer skills, with strong working knowledge of the primary Microsoft Office programs Physical Requirements: – Able to lift & carry items up to 15 lbs. – Able to sit at a desk comfortably while working on a computer, for extended periods of time. – Able to hear and speak to clients in person and/or by phone. – Able to see and read on computer screen and paper. – Able to use hands and fingers to operate office equipment such as a computer, copier, phone, postage meter, etc. – Ability to stand for extended periods of time with breaks. Work Schedule This is a full-time, salaried position based in Charlottesville, VA. The position reports to Piedmont Housing Alliance’s Deputy Director of Impact & Innovation. PHA provides a WorkFlex policy that allows employees to work on a hybrid schedule after they have completed their first 90 days of employment.
