Bus Drivers and Substitute Bus Drivers

School Bus/Van Drivers

We are seeking school bus/van drivers to join our team and help ensure the safe transportation of our students. Based on availability, drivers can work a morning route, an afternoon route, or both routes daily. Other trip routes may also be available for drivers.

Qualifications:

• Employee drivers must have a valid Michigan commercial driver's license (CDL-B) with S&P endorsements (school bus, passenger & air brake), along with all other requirements to drive a bus.
• Safe driving record.
• Ability to read and interpret a map, establish, and maintain proper conduct and safety of passengers on the school bus, and accept/relate to students with a variety of exceptional needs.
• Exercise good judgment and extreme caution while operating a school bus.
• Remain calm in an emergency situation.
• Knowledge of the proper application of first aid practices and procedures.
• Recognize mechanical safety hazards in the bus.
• Learn to designate orders of pickup and drop-off, modify bus routes, and prepare related reports.
• Ability to support all students and care for their well-being.
• Understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner.
• Meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the required duties safely and effectively.
• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties.
• Meet all requirements of the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and Michigan State Police, including: criminal background check; physical examination meeting FMCSA and Michigan standards; and drug and alcohol testing compliance.

Essential Job Functions:

• Drives a school bus safely in accordance with time schedules, transporting students to and from their homes, a variety of school sites, and on field trips as assigned.
• Oversees the loading and unloading of students, releasing students to authorized individuals.
• Maintains order and proper discipline of student passengers, resolves student passenger disputes, documents, and reports severe student passenger disciplinary cases.
• Conducts established safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily: pre-trip assures maintenance of bus is in safe and clean operating conditions: reports needed mechanical repairs, installs special safety equipment if needed, keeps the bus clean by sweeping the interior of the bus, and washes windows.
• Monitors students with special health problems while on the bus: receives written or oral instructions, is aware and alert to any signs of difficulty following prescribed instructions and procedures, administers first aid, and calls for emergency assistance if needed.
• Maintains a variety of records and reports, including but not limited to mileage, routing, maintenance, and time schedules.
• Attends meetings, programs, in-service training, and any other job-related training as assigned.
• Maintains current required licenses and certificates.
• Notifies appropriate individuals of any delays in scheduled routes.
• Assists with other routes when breakdown or other unusual circumstances occur, as assigned.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Non-Compliance:

These expectations apply to regular, substitute, and trip drivers. Failure to return a bus in acceptable condition may result in corrective action in accordance with department policy, district procedures, and the collective bargaining agreement.

Physical Demands:

The employee is frequently required to reach with arms and hands, use stairs, stand, walk, and sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate, but distractions can be frequent due to building traffic and students.

Mental Functions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to compare, analyze, communicate both orally and in writing, copy, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, quick decision making, use interpersonal skills, compile, and negotiate.

Additional Duties:

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment:

Uses standard office equipment such as tablets, computers, printers, copy/fax machines, and cell phones. Must be able to read maps and navigate roads.

Travel Requirements:

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
