Job Details Date Opened: Tuesday, July 07, 2026 12:00 AM Close Date: Tuesday, July 21, 2026 12:00 AM Department: Solid Waste Services Department Solid Waste Salary: $25.00 - $30.30, commensurate with experience Summary The Sanitation Equipment Operator employee will primarily operate a rear‑end loading sanitation vehicle to collect residential waste, yard waste, business garbage, and other debris. The Operator may serve as a lead person to a crew of two or more people. Hours: 6:30 am – until complete Major Duties And Responsibilities Operate a rear‑end loading sanitation, automatic collection, or other vehicle to collect residential waste including household trash, yard waste, recycling, bulky items, business garbage, litter, and other debris. Perform daily inspection of assigned equipment for readiness and safety. Carry out related manual labor tasks such as lifting and emptying containers, collecting yard waste or litter, often under all weather conditions. Serve as the lead person for a crew of two or more people. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Obtain a City’s driver permit. Knowledge and experience in the operation of heavy equipment; knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, safety precautions, and operational hazards. Ability to lift and carry 100 lb. Ability to read and follow street maps & driving routes. Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions. Work assigned shift; may be required to assist in multiple areas subject to overtime. Ability to work nights, weekends, or other unusual hours as needed for special events or emergency response. Ability to work holidays. Must have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Preferred Qualification Previous manual‑labor experience. Minimum Qualifications Three years of related driving experience operating heavy equipment and a valid CDL. Salary $26.65 per hour Conditions Of Employment The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on internal or external candidates applying for any position with the City of Charlotte.
