Laundry Specialist

Reports To: Custodial Supervisor Terms: 233 Days Department: Custodial Pay Grade: AX2

The Laundering Specialist is responsible for the cleaning, sanitizing, and proper maintenance of school linens, uniforms, mop heads, towels, and other washable materials used throughout the district's facilities. This position ensures laundry items are processed efficiently and hygienically in accordance with health and safety regulations and district standards.

Qualifications

Education/Certification: High school diploma or (GED) preferred Valid Texas Driver's License

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of proper laundering procedures and fabric care. Ability to operate and maintain commercial laundry equipment. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Physical stamina to lift heavy loads and stand for extended periods. Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and a safe, clean environment.

Working Conditions And Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a laundry room environment and may involve exposure to heat, noise, and cleaning chemicals. Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive motions.

Experience

1–2 years of experience in industrial or commercial laundry operations. Prior experience in a school, hospital, custodial, or maintenance setting. Familiarity with biohazard handling and sanitation protocols.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with provision of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.

Essential Job Functions

1. Operate commercial washers, dryers, and related equipment safely and efficiently. 2. Sort, wash, dry, fold, and organize laundry items including uniforms, cleaning cloths, mop heads, towels, and other custodial textiles. 3. Inspect laundered items for cleanliness, stains, or damage and take corrective action when needed. 4. Maintain inventory of laundry supplies and notify a supervisor when replenishment is needed. 5. Follow infection control procedures and OSHA safety guidelines, particularly with soiled or contaminated items. 6. Maintain a clean and organized laundry area. 7. Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of laundry equipment; report any equipment malfunctions. 8. Label and distribute clean laundry to appropriate custodial personnel or school sites. 9. Maintain accurate records of laundry cycles and services performed. 10. Delivery of laundered items to the different campuses. 11. Assist custodial staff with additional cleaning or custodial duties as needed. 12. Adhere to professional and ethical standards, in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the Texas Education Agency Code of Ethics. 13. Develop needed professional skills appropriate to job performance. 14. Maintain confidentiality. 15. Reliable attendance and punctuality. 16. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures. 17. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills. 18. Attend and participate in staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required. 19. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy. 20. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and the Superintendent of Schools.

Work Environment

Tools/Equipment Used: Primarily based in a designated laundry facility within the district (e.g., central operations center or larger school site). Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching, and overhead reaching. Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis. Environment: Exposure to heat, noise, humidity, and industrial chemicals; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours. Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
