Job Overview

The Senior Controller will be responsible for overseeing the accounting function at MD Squared Property Group, with primary responsibility for client/property accounting and additional oversight of key corporate accounting functions. The ideal candidate will have extensive accounting experience within the property management industry, including experience with both condominium/cooperative associations and rental properties. This individual should be a strong accounting leader with a proven track record of managing and developing teams, improving processes, strengthening financial controls, and ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.

The Senior Controller will manage a team of Property Accountants and other accounting team members as appropriate. We are looking for someone who is highly organized, process-oriented, curious, technology-forward, and comfortable building scalable systems as the company continues to grow.

Job Responsibilities

• Oversee the client accounting function, including financial reporting, budgeting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, banking, reconciliations, and other property-level accounting activities.
• Oversee and support select corporate accounting functions, including the general ledger, account reconciliations, accounts payable, expense review, cash management, and month-end close.
• Corporate financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and other financial initiatives.
• Ensure timely and accurate preparation and review of monthly financial statements and other client deliverables.
• Maintain appropriate accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and review processes across the department.
• Establish clear deadlines, workflows, and quality-control processes to ensure critical accounting tasks are completed accurately and on time.
• Review financial reporting and identify discrepancies, accounting issues, or areas requiring additional analysis or follow-up.
• Provide leadership, support, and accounting guidance to both the accounting and property management teams.
• Continuously evaluate departmental processes and implement improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy, accountability, and scalability.
• Oversee accounting support for existing clients and play an active role in onboarding new properties and clients to ensure a smooth financial transition.
• Work closely with property management leadership to resolve accounting and financial matters impacting clients and properties.
• Partner with internal technology resources and external vendors supporting AppFolio and other accounting systems, platforms, and services.
• Assist with annual audits, tax-related requests, and coordination with external accountants and other financial partners as needed.
• Attend client presentations, board meetings, and financial-related meetings as needed.
• Support on special projects, financial analysis, and other accounting initiatives as the company continues to grow.
• Oversee client payroll

Management Responsibilities

• Lead, manage, and develop a strong accounting team capable of supporting the financial needs of a growing and diverse portfolio.
• Establish clear expectations, accountability, and performance standards across the accounting department.
• Provide ongoing coaching, training, and professional development to team members.
• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and provide timely positive and constructive feedback.
• Build appropriate cross-training and documentation to ensure continuity across key accounting functions.
• Foster a collaborative, solutions-oriented team environment and encourage feedback and process improvement.
• Work closely with HR on recruiting, onboarding, performance management, and other employee-related matters within the department.
• Lead regular accounting team meetings and participate in leadership meetings to establish priorities, identify issues, and drive solutions.
• Model the company's Core Values and hold team members accountable for their responsibilities and commitments.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 7–12+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within property management, real estate, or a related industry.
• Strong property accounting experience, including condominium/cooperative and rental properties preferred.
• Prior experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Director, or similar senior accounting role strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience managing and developing an accounting team of at least five employees.
• Strong understanding of financial reporting, general ledger accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, and internal controls.
• Experience with corporate accounting in addition to property/client accounting preferred.
• AppFolio experience strongly preferred
• Strong technology skills and an interest in using technology, automation, and improved processes to create efficiencies.
• Ability to review financial information at a high level while also identifying and resolving detailed accounting issues.
• Strong organizational, project management, and time-management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to build productive and collaborative relationships across departments and with clients.
• Ability to manage competing priorities, tight deadlines, and urgent client or company matters.
• High level of integrity, discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
• CPA preferred but not required.
