Location: Albany, NY Category: Faculty Job Type: Full-time Posted On: Tue Aug 25 2026 Job Description: The Department of Educational & Counseling Psychology at the School of Education, UAlbany, is multidisciplinary and devoted to research, teaching, and service in the use of psychological principles to promote lifelong growth, learning, and development in multiple life roles and contexts. Four disciplines are represented in the department: Counseling Psychology, Educational Psychology and Methodology, School Psychology, and Special Education. The mission of the division of counseling psychology is to contribute theoretical and empirical scholarship that receives significant external recognition and support, and to prepare culturally responsive scientists and practitioners capable of intervening to improve quality in multiple life domains including emotional, relational, educational, work, and health. This position is open to the applications at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. Appointment rank will be determined based on the successful candidate's qualifications, experience, and record of accomplishment, consistent with applicable University, School, and departmental policies and criteria. This position will be housed in the Division of Counseling Psychology, within the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, with teaching responsibilities in the APA-accredited Ph.D. program in Counseling Psychology and MPCAC-accredited Master's program in Mental Health Counseling. We seek a scholar with an active and productive program of research, with a strong promise of obtaining external funding; the area of research focus is open, however should be consistent with the overall aims and focus of the field of Counseling Psychology. Candidates should be able to teach or oversee undergraduate and graduate courses in one or more of the following areas: theories of counseling, group counseling, behavior disorders, vocational psychology, assessment, substance use treatment and prevention, clinical practicum, and/or internship, as well as other graduate or undergraduate counseling courses as needed. The ability to teach core courses in psychology is desirable, although not required. Candidates must be sensitive to the needs of and possess an interest in working in an academic community that is diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, sexual orientation or identity, disability status, and protected veteran status. Primary Responsibilities: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conducting innovative research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals; securing external funding to support programmatic research; strong teaching of undergraduate, doctoral, and master's courses (online and in-person); advising doctoral and master's students; chairing and serving on doctoral dissertation committees; presenting research at professional meetings; supervising doctoral-level practica at the University's training clinic and in community agencies and masters -level practica in community agencies; taking on or sharing leadership roles within the Division; and service to the Department, School, University, community, and profession. Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate in Counseling Psychology or closely related discipline from a college or University accredited by an accreditor recognized by the US Department of Education or by an internationally recognized accrediting organization by August 20, 2027. Record of published research requisite for an appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor in the field of counseling psychology Applicants must address in their applications their ability to work with a culturally diverse population. Applicants must have documented experience and/or plans, and ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in varying modalities (in-person, online, and/or hybrid). Applicants must have a demonstrated potential for obtaining external funding for their research. Applicants must have training and/or experience supervising practica. Applicants must be licensed, or license eligible, as a psychologist in New York State. Qualifications for Appointment at the Assistant Professor Rank Evidence of potential to develop and sustain an independent program of research and scholarship, including peer-reviewed publications or other scholarly products appropriate to career stage. Evidence of potential to obtain external funding in support of programmatic research. Qualifications for Appointment at the Associate Professor Rank A demonstrated, sustained record of peer-reviewed scholarship and professional accomplishment appropriate for appointment at the Associate Professor rank in counseling psychology. Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, mentoring, and/or supervision at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. Demonstrated record of, or success in, applying for and/or obtaining externally funded research support, as appropriate to the candidate's area of scholarship. Evidence of professional, disciplinary, academic, or community service and leadership appropriate to rank. Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated success in securing externally funded grants.
