Member of Technical Staff - Product Engineer

Valthos

Product Engineer

Valthos Inc.

Valthos is an applied biological intelligence company. We build and deploy software and biological AI systems to safeguard humanity.

The same AI architectures that enable self-driving cars, land rockets with precision, and deliver expert-level reasoning are beginning to be deployed in biological design. To stay ahead, we must advance our arsenal of tools to capture and design against real-time sensitivities in nature's evolving mutational landscape.

We are a group of mission-driven software engineers from Palantir and applied biological ML engineers from MIT's Broad Institute and DeepMind making the latest advances in computational biology accessible in the real-world for federal and commercial use.

We are seeking a full-stack product engineer to own the design and frontend of our core product, from early prototypes through production interfaces. You will work directly with founders, engineers, and computational biologists to turn ambiguous scientific and defense workflows into clear, usable software. This role requires a product-minded engineer with strong UX judgment who can make complex tools feel precise and trustworthy in high-stakes environments.

The Role
  • Own the design and frontend implementation of core product experiences, from early user flows and prototypes through production-ready interfaces.

  • Work directly with founders, engineers, and computational biologists to translate ambiguous operational, scientific, and defense-related workflows into clear and usable software.

  • Design and build interfaces that make complex data, analysis results, workflows, alerts, review processes, and decision-support tools easy to understand, navigate, and act on.

  • Rapidly prototype new product concepts for users, pilots, demos, and customer discovery.

  • Improve the clarity, credibility, and usability of the product across onboarding, navigation, dashboards, workflow execution, and results interpretation.

  • Bring strong product judgment to early decisions around UX, information architecture, and frontend architecture.

  • Help create a product experience that feels precise, trustworthy, and operationally useful in high-stakes environments.

Qualifications (required)
  • Experience designing and building production-quality web applications.

  • Strong frontend engineering skills, especially with React, TypeScript, modern CSS, and component-based architecture.

  • Strong UX and visual design judgment, with the ability to create clear flows, polished interfaces, and usable interaction patterns.

  • Ability to work in Figma or similar design tools, while also being comfortable implementing your own designs.

  • Experience working closely with product and engineering teams in fast-moving environments.

  • Ability to operate independently, make reasonable tradeoffs, and ship without waiting for perfect specifications.

  • Strong communication skills, especially around design rationale, product tradeoffs, and implementation decisions.

  • Willingness to work on sensitive, defense-adjacent, and bio-related products with seriousness and discretion.

Qualifications (preferred)
  • Strong product taste and the ability to simplify complex workflows without oversimplifying the underlying domain.

  • A bias towards action. You can move from rough idea to working prototype to production implementation quickly.

  • Comfort with ambiguity, especially in an early-stage company where product direction, customer needs, and technical constraints are still evolving.

  • Respect for users operating in serious, mission-driven environments where clarity, reliability, and trust matter.

  • Systems thinking across both design and engineering: you care about reusable patterns, maintainable components, and coherent product structure.

  • High autonomy: willingness to take a problem and build an end-to-end solution.

  • An understanding of how to make software feel polished, modern, and credible without unnecessary ornamentation.

If there is a fit, we will schedule behavioral and technical interviews. The final step is an onsite in our office, where you will work on a small project, discuss ideas, and work with the wider team.
