Police Officer - Recruitment/Relocation Incentive Authorized

Summary This position will serve as a Police Officer assigned to the West Los Angeles campus at the Greater Los Angeles VA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. The Police Officer will perform a full range of police duties by following and executing rules, regulations, or procedures covering law and rules enforcement, physical and personal security operations, patrol duties, control desk duty, coordination with local courts, and/or crime prevention activities for the local jurisdiction. Responsibilities Patrol neighborhoods and the VA Health Care center to deter and detect criminal activity and maintain a visible police presence. Respond to various calls, including mental health emergencies, crimes in progress, accidents, assaults, domestic disputes, and medical emergencies, providing first‑responder assistance. Exercise legal authority to carry firearms and enforce laws within the jurisdiction of the Department of Veteran Affairs. Issue citations or make arrests as authorized by law. Investigate incidents, gather evidence, interview witnesses and suspects, and prepare detailed reports for potential prosecution. Engage in community policing strategies, meeting with citizens and participating in outreach programs to build trust and cooperation. Observe people and activities to identify suspicious behaviors or law violations. Execute arrests and searches or seizures as authorized by law. Document incidents, evidence, and investigative findings in written reports. Direct traffic, investigate accidents, and enforce traffic laws. Provide public assistance by giving information and helping people in distress. Support working in moderate to high risk environments, including hazardous materials, extreme temperatures, and adverse weather conditions, while following safety precautions. Work a compressed/flexible schedule, including weekends, irregular hours, extended hours, and possible placement or detailed assignment to other related services or locations. Remain ineligible for work while in a virtual setting. Qualifications At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑5 in Federal service (or equivalent pay band), demonstrating knowledge of laws, regulations, and law‑enforcement operations, and involving responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Experience must be fully documented in the resume with job title, duties, month & year start/end dates, and hours worked per week; a full year equals 35–40 hours per week. Specialized experience must include investigative work, patrolling assigned area(s) to enforce laws and ordinances, regulating traffic, controlling crowds, preventing crimes, and/or arresting violators; experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying. Must possess a valid unrestricted state driver’s license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate medical fitness to operate a vehicle safely. Must pass the agency Government Vehicle Drivers physical examination. VA Police Officers are required to carry agency‑approved firearms while on duty at VA property; officers must achieve and maintain qualification/certification with the approved firearms as a condition of continued employment. New VA Police Officers must attend an 8‑week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas; satisfactory completion is required for continued employment. Selected candidates for a drug‑testing position must submit a urinalysis before appointment; refusal results in denial of employment. A medical examination and a psychological examination are required; medical conditions are not automatically disqualifying but may be if they prevent assignment to duties. Applicants must be willing to accept a relocation incentive (up to 15% sign‑on bonus) if authorized. Must be able to pass a 1.5‑mile run, push‑ups, and sit‑ups based on VA physical standards for admission to the VA Police Academy.
