Paramedic

The City of Folsom is recruiting for seven (7) Paramedic positions to join the Folsom Fire Department Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division. These Paramedics respond to a variety of emergency and non‑emergency calls, providing Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), medical transport, and other related activities in the community. Distinguishing Characteristics The Folsom Fire Paramedic is an advanced journey‑level classification. Incumbents may receive direction from company officers and perform the full range of Paramedic emergency medical assistance duties. Unlike Firefighters, Paramedics do not combat or extinguish fires, and unlike EMTs, they provide Advanced Life Support. Supervision General supervision is provided by a designated Fire Captain or other fire officers within the Department Chain of Command. Testing Schedule 1st EMS Assessment Test: July 8–10, 2026 1st Panel Interview: July 8–10, 2026 2nd EMS Assessment Test: July 14–16, 2026 2nd Panel Interview: July 14–16, 2026 Tentative Academy Start Date: August 17, 2026 (subject to background) Duties and Responsibilities Respond to BLS and ALS medical calls and provide emergency medical care and transportation. Deliver emergency and non‑emergency medical services in accordance with Sacramento County EMS policies. Perform duties in compliance with department operating procedures, and city, county, state, and federal laws and ordinances. Assist other fire and medical personnel as directed. Operate ambulance to transport patients and staff safely and timely. Inspect and document inventory of controlled medications on the ambulance. Document and complete all reports, including pre‑hospital patient care reports and incident reports. Maintain patient information confidential in accordance with HIPAA. Rescue individuals from danger and administer medical aid as necessary. Perform routine housekeeping duties at the fire station, such as mowing, bed making, cleaning walls, washing windows, and sweeping floors. Promote fire safety, burn prevention, and public education among community contacts. Support functions such as restocking supplies, cleaning equipment, and transporting equipment. Perform decontamination procedures in compliance with Cal OSHA regulations. Execute related duties as assigned. Knowledge of Emergency medical care principles and practices. Emergency ambulance and transportation procedures, including first aid and gurney operations. Medical terminology and documentation. Maintenance of medical equipment and supplies. Current laws and regulations related to emergency medical services and safety. Folsom City geography, streets, and buildings. Operation of EMS vehicles and equipment, including radios. Safe emergency work practices. Essential Incident Command System (ICS) principles. Medical resources. Ability to Make critical decisions that affect patient safety under stressful and chaotic circumstances. Observe accurately and use independent judgment to determine appropriate actions during emergency response. Deal tactfully and effectively with the public, respecting the community’s cultural diversity. Safely transport patients during ambulance transport. Learn emergency medical information from oral and written sources. Complete electronic documentation promptly, protecting patient privacy per department policies and legal requirements. Report concerns regarding patient privacy policies through the chain of command. Apply mechanical diagrams and concepts. Read electronic and incident maps; follow map directions. Establish and maintain effective team relationships and support department mission and values. Communicate clearly in verbal and written forms. Operate a vehicle safely and legally. Operate radio and other communication equipment. Education High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Experience No experience required; prior EMT field experience is desirable. Special Requirements Valid California or National Registry Paramedic License (EMT‑P) by application time. Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support; Pediatric Advanced Life Support; and/or HANDTEVY and CPR certifications by application time. Complete local accreditation through Sacramento County Emergency Medical Services Agency (SCEMSA) within three months of appointment. At least 18 years of age at application. Valid California Class C Driver License by application time. Medical Examination, Background, and Drug Testing Candidates must pass a pre‑employment medical examination, drug test, and background investigation, which may include a criminal history check, fingerprinting, psychology exam, credit check, and drug‑use history. Respiratory Protective Equipment This role requires wearing respiratory protective equipment at times; facial hair must be shaven when it interferes with a safe fit. Working Conditions Work is performed inside and outside, day and/or night, with congested traffic and unsafe road conditions. Employees may work near moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, and in adverse weather. Exposure to wet or humid conditions, icy or muddy areas, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration, electrocution, extreme heat or cold, and traumatic sights and smells is possible. Noise levels are usually moderate, except during certain EMS activities. Health Exposure Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissues, in accordance with the Department of Industrial Relations Title 8, § 5193 Bloodborne Pathogens. Physical Demands Work requires sustained physical activity and intense concentration under stressful conditions. Tasks include lifting, dragging, carrying, or moving 100 pounds or more; standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, or crawling; using hands and fingers to operate objects, controls, or tools and reaching with hands and arms. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Manual dexterity and coordination are required to operate equipment such as computers and telephones. Incumbents may work outdoors in all weather, around loud siren noise, and moving vehicles. Probationary Period Employees must complete an orientation academy and twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level before gaining permanent status.
