Custodian III - 4 Positions

Summer Custodians

Length of employment: As needed during employment term, summer of 2026.

Custodian shift: To be determined.

Salary: State minimum salary schedule for service personnel, state custodial pay scale.

FLSA status: Non-exempt.

Reports to: Maintenance director/maintenance supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, general equivalent development certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5.
  • Personnel must be or have been classified in this category or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e.
  • Criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c.
  • The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the job description.
  • Currently enrolled Pocahontas County high school students are eligible to apply, however, preference will be given to current Pocahontas County regular and substitute staff.

Title: Custodian means a person employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse, to operate the heating or cooling systems, and to make minor repairs.

Job summary: To perform duties which keep the county buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions of the educational program. The custodian performs assigned custodial duties and repairs and receives supervision from the building administrator. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated. Staff members serve as role models for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings. Staff members are expected to refrain from bullying, harassment, intimidation, and discrimination.

  • Dust, clean, polish fixtures, woodwork, and equipment.
  • Wash windows and dust blinds.
  • Clean restrooms and replenish with supplies.
  • Sweep, mop, wax, and polish floors, stairs, corridors, and courts using brooms, mops, and buffer.
  • Clean rugs and carpets with vacuum cleaner.
  • Dispose of trash and waste materials.
  • Clean doors, door facings, and walls with disinfectants.
  • Move equipment and supplies.
  • Check and replace light bulbs.
  • Sweep sidewalks around buildings.
  • Report safety hazards within and around buildings.
  • List and report needed repairs.
  • Store equipment.
  • Keep stock of inventory and request supplies as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintain equipment.
  • Clean shower rooms and gym.
  • Operate and maintain weed eater, lawn mower, floor scrubber, floor buffer, and vacuum cleaner.
  • Arrange table and chairs for breakfast and lunch.
  • Secure the building at night.
  • Operate hand and small power tools.
  • Prepare facilities for activities and clean up after the activities.
  • Shampoo carpets.
  • Perform inspections for fire extinguishers and emergency lighting.
  • Clean ceiling and restroom vents.
  • Performs custodian work involving independent activity to keep school clean, sanitary, and in an orderly condition, as well as minor maintenance tasks.
  • Performs assigned manual work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility. Job assignments are in the form of written or oral instructions and are performed under supervision and reviewed periodically.
  • Maintains watch over property and grounds against trespassing, vandalism, and fire hazards. Signal police and fire departments when needed.
  • Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including regular waxing, and in a good state of preservation.
  • Performs supportive duties such as: displays flags, flies flag at half-staff, inventories supplies, reports safety hazards within building, stores equipment, services carpeted areas.
  • Assists in building maintenance by replacing window glass, cleaning gutters and drainpipes, freeing stopped sanitary and sink plumbing, repairing leaks, repairing furniture, doing simple painting, replacing lights, and performing other related work as assigned.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  • Maintains grounds by cutting grass with hand and power mowers and string trimmers, collecting litter, trimming bushes and small trees, raking grounds, mulching or adding other ground cover, planting shrubs or flowers, and performing minor repairs to walks, paths, walls, play apparatus, roads, and site improvements.
  • Performs routine lubrication services and minor preventative maintenance services.
  • Operates security systems and fire safety systems.
  • Inspects buildings and reports deficiencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical demands:

  • Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  • Must be able to lift all supplies and materials about the custodian position.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and push and/or pull 50 pound loads at a time.
  • Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 30 and 60 pounds.
  • Sitting: Rarely: ½ hour in an 8-hour work shift.
  • Standing: Constantly: 2 hours in an 8-hour work shift. Alternates continuously with walking.
  • Walking: Constantly: 5 ½ hours in an 8-hour work shift.
  • Lifting and carrying:
    • 1-10 pounds continuously: cleaning supplies, stocking items, ladders, salt, mop buckets, mops, etc.
    • 11-22 pounds continuously: cleaning supplies, operate string trimmer, gas cans, etc.
    • 21-35 pounds frequently: buckets of cleaning agents, emptying garbage, stocking inventory items, deliveries, operate string trimmer, snow removal, etc.
    • 36-50 pounds frequently: buckets of cleaning agents, emptying garbage, stocking inventory items, deliveries, lawn mowers, snow removal, etc.
    • 51-75 pounds rarely: buckets of cleaning agents, emptying garbage, stocking inventory items, deliveries, lawn mowers, snow removal, moving furniture, etc. (employ assistance with items over 50 pounds)
    • 76-100 pounds rarely: buckets of cleaning agents, emptying garbage, stocking inventory items, deliveries, lawn mowers, snow removal, moving furniture, etc. (employ assistance with items over 50 pounds)
    • 100+ pounds rarely: buckets of cleaning agents, emptying garbage, stocking inventory items, deliveries, lawn mowers, snow removal, moving furniture, etc. (employ assistance with items over 50 pounds)
  • Frequently pushing & pulling:
    • floor buffer, broom, mop, garbage cans, shoveling, mowing grass, etc.
  • Forward bending frequently: mowing grass, operate string trimmer, pick up garbage, cleaning tables, chairs, and desks
  • Squatting & stooping frequently: picking up debris inside and outside, cleaning the building, etc.
  • Kneeling cleaning, weeding, spot scrubbing floors, etc.
  • Crawling spot scrubbing floors, cleaning baseboards, etc.
  • Occasionally climbing: washing windows, cleaning tops of shelves and cabinets, etc.
