Director of HR Operations, Payroll and Benefits

Position Title Director of HR Operations, Payroll and Benefits Location Greenville, SC Job ID 139 # of Openings 1 Position Summary The Director of HR Operations, Payroll & Benefits provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for payroll administration, benefits administration, HR compliance, workers’ compensation administration, HRIS management, workforce administration processes, policy governance, and leave administration. This role serves as a collaborative peer leader within the Human Resources function and partners closely with the Director of People & Culture and organizational leadership to ensure operational excellence, regulatory compliance, fiscal stewardship, and exceptional employee support. Mission Statement To provide operationally excellent, compliant, and employee-centered Human Resources administration that supports organizational effectiveness, promotes accountability, strengthens workforce systems, and enhances the overall employee and resident experience through professionalism, responsiveness, and compassionate service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities HR Operations Leadership & Governance Provide strategic leadership and oversight for payroll administration, benefits administration, HR compliance, leave administration, HRIS management, workforce administration, and policy governance. Develop, maintain, and continuously improve HR operational workflows, SOPs, administrative controls, and workforce administration processes. Promote operational excellence, process consistency, cross‑functional collaboration, and service‑oriented leadership throughout HR Operations. Support organizational decision‑making through workforce analytics, reporting, dashboards, and HR metrics. Payroll Administration Provide oversight of payroll administration, payroll processing workflows, payroll audits, payroll controls, and payroll compliance activities. Ensure accurate and timely processing of weekly and bi‑weekly payrolls, including oversight of timekeeping systems, PTO balances, garnishments, tax withholdings, deductions, and payroll records. Partner with Finance regarding payroll reconciliation, workforce budgeting support, and payroll‑related reporting. Benefits Administration Oversee employee benefits programs including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, retirement plans, ancillary benefits, and annual open enrollment. Coordinate employee benefit enrollments, qualifying life event changes, COBRA administration, terminations, and benefits continuation processes. Monitor benefit utilization trends and provide recommendations regarding benefit plan effectiveness and employee participation. Coordinate benefits invoicing, reconciliation, vendor management, and reporting activities. Lead leave administration processes including FMLA, ADA accommodations, workers’ compensation leave coordination, and other applicable leave programs. Administer workers’ compensation claims, return‑to‑work programs, modified duty coordination, and related reporting. Coordinate unemployment claims administration, hearings, documentation, and responses. Maintain current knowledge of payroll regulations, ACA requirements, COBRA, FMLA, retirement plan administration, and applicable employment regulations. Maintain HR compliance programs and support organizational audit readiness. Coordinate formal compliance‑related investigations and documentation processes. Support workplace safety initiatives, OSHA‑related reporting, incident documentation, and organizational risk mitigation efforts. Employee Support & Partnership Provide responsive, service‑oriented support to employees regarding payroll, benefits, leave administration, and workforce administration matters. Partner closely with the Director of People & Culture to ensure alignment between workforce administration, onboarding, employee experience, recruiting, retention, and organizational culture initiatives. Support employee onboarding administration including payroll setup, benefits enrollment, and compliance documentation. Policy Governance & Records Administration Serve as primary administrator for policy governance, handbook administration, document retention, version control, and workforce administration documentation. Maintain confidentiality and security of employee, payroll, and organizational information. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting, or related field preferred. Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in HR operations, payroll, benefits administration, or related workforce administration functions. Strong working knowledge of payroll processing, payroll tax regulations, HR compliance, employment regulations, benefits administration, leave management, and HR operational best practices. Experience managing workers’ compensation administration, claims coordination, return‑to‑work processes, and workplace safety administration preferred. Experience with HRIS/payroll systems such as Paycor or similar platforms preferred. Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and systems‑thinking capabilities. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and manage sensitive matters professionally. SHRM‑CP, SHRM‑SCP, PHR, SPHR, CPP, CEBS, or other relevant professional certification preferred. Experience within healthcare, hospitality, senior living, or other service‑oriented industries preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, walk, communicate effectively, and utilize standard office equipment for extended periods of time. Occasional lifting, carrying, or moving of items up to 25 pounds may be required. Success Measures Accurate and timely payroll processing with minimal errors or corrective actions required. Effective administration and communication of employee benefits and leave programs. Strong compliance performance with employment regulations, documentation standards, and audit readiness. Efficient management of workers’ compensation claims, workplace safety coordination, and return‑to‑work administration. High employee satisfaction with payroll, benefits, and workforce administration support. Consistent maintenance of HR operational workflows, SOPs, and policy governance practices. Strong collaboration with Finance, operational leaders, and the Director of People & Culture. Continuous identification and implementation of operational improvements that enhance efficiency, compliance, and employee support.
