Responsibilities Provide mental health services to the inmate population. Deliver 24‑hour supervision and coordinate staff and on‑call coverage, including weekends. Make rounds and give direct care and clinical oversight of multidisciplinary treatment teams. Coordinate the work of medical staff with related programs. Review treatment plans, clinical records, diagnoses, and discharge plans for policy and TJC/HCFA compliance. Provide education and training, including grand rounds and case conferences. Assign, supervise, and evaluate staff as well as on‑site physicians or psychiatrists. Participate in meetings on clinical and administrative policy, research, program development, and treatment techniques. Assess, examine, diagnose, and prescribe appropriate medications and treatments for psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. Perform advanced risk assessments. Consult on difficult and complex cases. Develop and implement QA/QI process improvement initiatives. Prepare and review medical records, reports, and correspondence. Conduct utilization review and management functions. Attend court hearings as a state witness. Perform related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Extensive knowledge of behavioral health medicine and current assessment and treatment principles for psychiatric illnesses and substance abuse disorders. Up‑to‑date understanding of developments and best practices in psychiatry and substance abuse treatment. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Ability to examine, diagnose, assess, and treat patients with psychiatric illnesses and substance abuse disorders. Proficiency in prescribing, conducting psychotherapy, medication management, and other relevant treatments. Capacity to develop collaborative group practice environments with other psychiatrists, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members. Skill in analyzing laboratory reports, imaging, and other medical or psychological findings. Administrative and supervisory competencies. Minimum Qualifications Certification as a specialist in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, or board certification in Adult or Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Special Requirements Active license to practice medicine and surgery in Connecticut (temporary license up to one year is permissible). Eligibility to participate in federal health care programs per 42 U.S. 1320a‑7b(f). Possibility of requiring certification as a specialist in geriatrics, ABI/TBI, forensic psychiatry, substance abuse, or related fields. May need additional relevant licenses, certifications, or permits. Potential bilingual requirement.
