Principal Hardware Design Engineer – BMS

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Principal Hardware Design Engineer – BMS to lead the electrical hardware design and development of advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS) for high-voltage automotive and energy storage applications.

This is a senior-level engineering opportunity for someone with a strong background in automotive electronics, battery systems, PCB design, analog/digital circuit design, and high-voltage systems . The ideal candidate will provide technical leadership throughout the full hardware development lifecycle, from electrical architecture and schematic development through prototype testing, validation, and production.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead end-to-end electrical hardware design for automotive Battery Management Systems.
• Define BMS electrical architecture based on system requirements and functional safety goals.
• Design and develop circuits for high-voltage monitoring, cell balancing, battery protection, current/voltage measurement, and temperature sensing .
• Develop hardware incorporating PCBs, microcontrollers, analog and digital circuits, sensors, and communication interfaces.
• Create detailed electrical schematics and support PCB layout activities.
• Select and evaluate electronic components for performance, reliability, cost, and availability.
• Build, troubleshoot, and test hardware prototypes.
• Develop and integrate monitoring circuits and sensors for battery voltage, current, temperature, and state-of-charge measurements.
• Support communication interfaces including CAN, LIN, and SPI .
• Work closely with software, systems, validation, and manufacturing engineering teams to integrate BMS hardware into complete battery systems.
• Develop and maintain engineering documentation including specifications, test plans, DFMEA, WCCA, and test reports .
• Conduct technical design reviews and provide guidance to other engineers.
• Troubleshoot electrical and hardware issues and drive corrective actions through resolution.
• Ensure hardware designs comply with applicable automotive and battery safety standards, including ISO 26262 and other relevant requirements.
• Collaborate with internal and external customers to define system and performance requirements.
• Provide technical oversight and coordination with global and offshore engineering teams.
• Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in BMS hardware design, development processes, and product performance.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering field .
• 10+ years of experience in automotive or comparable electrical/electronic hardware development.
• Strong experience with Battery Management Systems, battery packs, high-voltage systems, EVs, or energy storage systems .
• Strong understanding of analog and digital circuit design .
• Experience designing and troubleshooting electronic hardware and PCBs.
• Experience with microcontrollers, sensors, and automotive communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, and SPI.
• Experience creating and reviewing electrical schematics.
• Experience with PCB design tools such as Altium Designer or Cadence .
• Experience with circuit simulation tools such as SPICE .
• Knowledge of lithium-ion battery technologies and battery safety.
• Strong electrical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working through the complete hardware development lifecycle from concept through prototype, validation, and production.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical reviews and resolve complex cross-functional engineering issues.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• Experience with Li-Ion battery pack design .
• Experience with automotive electronic control units (ECUs), power systems, MEMS, or advanced sensors.
• Experience with ISO 26262 / functional safety .
• Experience with DFMEA and WCCA .
• Experience with C or C++ programming.
• Experience working with global or offshore engineering teams.
• Previous technical leadership or engineering team leadership experience.
