Position Summary:

The Assistant Superintendent plays a key role in supporting the Superintendent or Senior Superintendent by helping ensure projects progress efficiently and are completed on schedule and within budget. This position provides on-site assistance in managing jobsite safety, quality control, and project scheduling. Depending on the project’s staffing structure, the Assistant Superintendent reports directly to either the Superintendent or Senior Superintendent.

This position provides advanced exposure to heavy civil construction execution, with a primary focus on water and wastewater treatment plants, conveyance systems, pumping stations, and transportation infrastructure (highways, bridges, interchanges, grading, utilities, and related Department of Transportation projects). The primary goal is to develop strong field leadership skills, deepen technical expertise, and demonstrate readiness for supervisory advancement through initiative, mentorship, safety advocacy, and consistent project delivery.

Success in this role requires proven technical proficiency, strong communication, reliability, a proactive mindset, and a commitment to team development and project excellence. Duration in this position varies based on individual performance and project opportunities, often serving as a bridge to Superintendent or Senior Superintendent roles.

Essential Functions:

1. Lead and promote jobsite safety planning, monitoring, and compliance with OSHA standards, company policies, and site-specific plans (including confined space, trench safety, hazardous materials, fall protection, and traffic control common in treatment plants and transportation projects); conduct toolbox talks and safety audits.
2. Maintain deep knowledge of project plans, specifications, and contract documents; provide advanced interpretation and guidance to field crews, subcontractors, and junior team members on specialized elements such as process piping, structural concrete, excavation/dewatering, hydraulic systems, treatment equipment, earthwork, grading, utilities, and traffic control.
3. Lead Quality Control processes, including pre-pour checklists, inspections, deficiency identification/correction, documentation for as-builts, and ensuring work meets or exceeds specifications.
4. Coordinate and supervise subcontractors; assist in scheduling, scope verification, performance monitoring, and conflict resolution to maintain alignment with the project schedule.
5. Maintain and oversee comprehensive project documentation, including daily reports, three-week look-ahead schedules, timekeeping, equipment logs, and progress records.
6. Manage material procurement follow-up, delivery sequencing, and jobsite organization/staging to support efficient, uninterrupted field operations.
7. Capture and manage daily/weekly progress photos, videos, and documentation; ensure timely uploads to company systems (e.g., Box, Procore) and use for reporting, claims defense, and quality records.
8. Oversee protection, maintenance, and care of company-owned assets (tools, equipment, survey instruments, temporary facilities); coordinate repairs, report issues, and ensure proper usage by the team.
9. They have a full understanding of the project variance and can calculate production and track progress to ensure budget adherence.
10. Mentor and assist in developing newer Field Engineers, apprentices, and other team members.
11. Identifies potential issues, troubleshoots field conflicts, and assists with punch lists and project closeout. 
12. Strong verbal skills to direct trades and communicate with Superintendents, Project managers, Engineers, and Owners.

Qualifications:

• Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering or a related field (Preferred)
• 3+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, preferably in water/wastewater treatment, utilities, or transportation infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated experience supporting field operations, subcontractor coordination, and project scheduling on complex construction projects.
• OSHA 30-hour certification (Preferred).
• Familiarity with DOT, municipal, and environmental regulatory requirements.
• Familiarity with Procore construction management software (Preferred).
• Proven ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
• Exposure to leadership responsibilities, including mentoring junior staff or leading small crews.

Skills & Knowledge:

• Strong understanding of heavy civil construction methods, including excavation, grading, utilities, structural concrete, and process/mechanical systems.
• Working knowledge of safety standards, hazard recognition, and jobsite compliance practices (OSHA and company policies).
• Ability to read plans, specifications, and technical documents to field execution.
• Proficiency in scheduling concepts, including look-ahead planning and production tracking (Preferred).
• Effective communication skills with field staff, subcontractors, and clients.
• Strong organizational and documentation skills.
• Problem-solving mindset with the ability to identify issues early and assist in developing practical solutions.
• Ability to adapt in a fast-paced, evolving jobsite environment while maintaining attention to detail.
• Working knowledge of construction equipment, materials, and field technology tools.
