Police Officer - Academy Trained

City and Job Overview The City of Garden Grove is currently accepting online applications for the position of Police Officer – Academy Trained. Essential Duties Police officers work under general supervision to perform law enforcement and crime prevention within a community policing philosophy. Responsibilities include controlling traffic flow, enforcing state and local laws, and conducting investigative work. Requirements Education: Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED. Certificates: Completion of a California POST-approved Basic Academy within the last three years or possession of a valid POST certificate. A copy of the certificate must be attached to the application. Age: Minimum 21 years of age at time of appointment. Physical Condition: Excellent physical condition and the ability to perform all tasks required of a police officer. Must meet vision and hearing standards outlined by the City. Work Authorization: Eligible for employment in the United States under federal law. Driver’s License: Valid California Class "C" license with an acceptable driving record (no more than three points in five years and no more than one DUI in ten years). Abilities & Skills: Strong customer service skills, attention to detail, understanding of written and oral orders, and ability to work cooperatively with City staff, citizens, and other agencies. Bilingual Skills: Fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Korean is highly desirable. Other Requirements: Legal authorization to carry a firearm and no felony convictions. Selection Process Application Screening Physical Agility Test (tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2026) Panel Interview (tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2026) Background Investigation including CVSA Examination Psychological Evaluation Pre‑Employment Medical Examination Benefits Vacation: Accrues at progressive rates from 80 hours after one year up to 246 hours after 24 years. Sick Leave: 10 hours per full calendar month of service. Retirement: Tier I and Tier II options under PERS with survivor and death benefits. Education Incentives: Additional pay for higher education degrees and POST certificates. Longevity Pay: Incremental salary increases for 15, 20, and 25 years of service. Bilingual Pay: Additional compensation for Spanish, Korean, and Vietnamese skills. Cafeteria Plan & Health Insurance: Fringe benefit allocation for health, dental, vision, flexible reimbursement, and deferred compensation. Overtime: Primarily time and a half; some positions pay straight time.
