The Role As Principal Designer at Mochi Health, you'll lead the creation of healthcare experiences that feel effortless, trustworthy, and human. You'll build and lead a design team responsible for every patient and provider touchpoint—from our marketplace discovery experience to medication management tools to clinical workflows. This isn't about making healthcare prettier; it's about making it work. This is a player-coach role (roughly 80% hands-on IC work, 20% management). You'll be partnering closely with Product, Engineering, Clinical, and Operations to ensure design drives strategy. You'll establish design systems, processes, and culture that scale with our rapid growth while maintaining the quality and craft that earns patient trust in a regulated, high-stakes industry. This is fundamentally an individual-contributor role, not a management-heavy position. The majority of your time will be spent directly in the work: designing flows in Figma, owning key interactions end-to-end, and solving hard design problems hands-on. You'll lead a small, high-leverage team of 5-7 designers and researchers rather than a large organization—enough to scale design quality, without pulling you away from the craft itself. If you're looking for a role where you mostly delegate and review, this isn't it. We need someone who wants to stay close to Figma, the flows, and the details—someone energized by doing the work, not just directing it. What You'll Do Design as a Player-Coach Get hands-on in Figma across our patient marketplace, provider tools, pharmacy platform, and clinical workflows—leading by doing, not just directing Set design direction while personally owning key flows and interaction design Build a design culture that balances speed, craft, and patient-centricity Build and Lead a Lean Design Team Recruit, hire, and develop a small, high-performing design team (5-7 people: Product Designers, UX Researchers, Design Systems) Create mentorship and growth paths for designers Partner with Product and Engineering to facilitate feature needs and timelines Establish Design Operations Build and maintain a scalable design system that enables consistency and speed Implement tools, processes, and workflows that let designers focus on solving problems, not navigating bureaucracy Define quality standards and design reviews that maintain craft without slowing velocity Create metrics and frameworks to measure design impact on business outcomes What You Bring Leadership Experience 10+ years in product design, with at least 4+ years leading design teams (5+ people), ideally in a player-coach capacity Comfortable spending the majority of your time as an individual contributor while still leading a small team Experience hiring, developing, and retaining senior design talent Proven ability to influence executive leadership and drive design-led strategy Craft & Execution Deep expertise in user-centered design, interaction design, visual design, and design systems—and still actively practicing it, not just overseeing it Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end ownership of complex, multi-sided products Strong understanding of modern design and AI tools (Figma, Claude, prototyping, user testing platforms) Experience shipping products that balance user needs with business constraints Strategic Thinking Can translate business goals and user needs into clear design strategy and brand vision Comfortable with ambiguity and making decisions with incomplete information Data-informed approach to design decisions (qualitative + quantitative) Understands how design impacts metrics like conversion, retention, and patient outcomes Communication & Collaboration Exceptional communication skills—can articulate design rationale to technical and non-technical audiences Proven ability to build trust and alignment across Product, Engineering, and executive leadership, board members, and external stakeholders Startup Mindset Thrives in fast-paced, high-growth environments where priorities shift Comfortable wearing multiple hats and doing the work yourself when needed Unafraid to DO as much as LEAD—this role is closer to 80% IC, 20% management Application Process Application Review - Submit resume, portfolio, and cover letter Recruiter Screen - 30-minute conversation about your background and interest (includes brief logic/probability question) Hiring Manager Screen - 30-minute conversation Portfolio Presentation - 60-minute deep dive into 2-3 case studies with Product/Design leadership Onsite Interview - Conversations with cross-functional leaders and CEO Offer - Typically 2-3 weeks from application to offer To Apply: Send your resume, portfolio (PDF or link), and a brief note about why you're excited about this role Life at Mochi At Mochi Health, we believe you do your best work when you feel your best. It’s designed for deep work and casual collaboration The base salary for this full-time position ranges from $300,000 to $350,000, in addition to benefits and 20% yearly performance bonus.
