Overview Job Title: Service Manager Department: Grocery FLSA : Non-Exempt Company : Hy-Vee Primary Responsibilities Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service, and ensures that customer needs are met. Supervises and coordinates the activities of employees or performs the work of all job levels. Maintains a positive attitude; creates an atmosphere of friendliness and fun through flexibility and teamwork. Generates a friendly atmosphere by encouraging employees to greet and speak to customers; provides prompt, courteous, and efficient service and sets a good example. Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting care and patience in all interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store. Greets customers in a friendly manner and learns customers’ names when possible. Assists customers by escorting them to products, securing items, loading or unloading heavy items, and noting customer suggestions or requests. Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to callers. Provides leadership and maintains positive employee relations; plans and adjusts work schedules and assigns employees to duties, following up to ensure timely completion. Supervises and coordinates activities of employees in all areas of the store or performs work at all job levels as needed. Formulates pricing philosophies or merchandise following guidelines established by the Store Director. Ensures proper customer service throughout the store and addresses customer issues. Evaluates employee performance to recommend personnel actions such as promotion, transfer, or dismissal. Trains and enforces safety procedures to provide a safe and healthy work environment; handles customer accident forms and safety-related tasks. Maintains store accounting basics and managerial data (sales, inventory, ad/display projections/actuals, etc.). Orders merchandise, verifies delivery, ensures quality, and reports discrepancies. Trains workers in store policies, department procedures, and job duties; ensures compliance with policies, laws, security, and record-keeping procedures. Maintains knowledge of store advertising and promotions and assists in merchandising to meet customer and store profitability. Performs other related job duties and special projects as required. Secondary Duties And Responsibilities Determines motivational needs of employees and provides an appropriate environment. Stays current with market trends and information (competition, new products, equipment, merchandising techniques). Provides continuous education for employees regarding new policies, procedures, and job duties. Sells merchandise to customers or handles requisitions by authorized personnel (inter-store transfers). Handles cash registers and assists in cost reduction programs. Reviews personnel records for completeness and understands payroll basics. Assists in other areas of the store as needed and performs other job-related duties and special projects as required. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Worker Characteristics Ability to solve practical problems and interpret instructions with a variety of variables and limited standardization. Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages. Ability to interview to obtain information, guide people to provide direction, and follow technical manuals with increased contact with people. Education And Experience High School or equivalent experience. Two years or more of similar or related work experience preferred. Supervisory Responsibilities (Direct Reports) Instructing, assigning work, reviewing work, planning the work of others, maintaining standards, allocating personnel, and coordinating activities. Selects new employees and acts on employee problems. Has the authority to recommend transfers, promotions, discipline, discharge, and salary adjustments. Physical Requirements Must be able to perform medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly to move objects. Visual requirements include various ranges of vision; depth perception, color vision, and field of vision. Physically capable of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions. Working Conditions This position is exposed to dust, noise, and temperature extremes. Possible equipment movement hazards; electrical shock, and exposure to chemicals and solvents. Fast-paced work environment. Equipment Used To Perform Job Pallet jack, box cutter, cash registers, knives, trash compactor, cardboard baler, forklift, computer, calculator, telephone, fax machine, two wheeler, register computer, ordering machine, limited power equipment, delivery vehicle, and related systems. Financial Responsibility Authorized to purchase merchandise and supplies and order repairs on equipment. Contacts Has daily contact with customers, employees, suppliers/vendors, and the general public. Occasional contact with federal or state regulatory agencies regarding inspections. Confidentiality Has access to confidential information which may include pricing, sales reports, profit and loss reports, and wages.
