Phlebotomist IIIThe Phlebotomist III plays a key role in providing high-quality specimen collection and handling services in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. This position focuses on performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and processing, troubleshooting workflow issues, training others, and recommending improvements to enhance efficiency and patient care.Responsibilities:Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.Package specimens for transport, following all procedures required to maintain specimen integrity during transit.Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes as required.Follow different specimen handling and transport procedures as outlined by specific protocols to ensure accurate test results.Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory standards and safety guidelines.Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure all records are current and complete.Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory tests and specimen requirements.Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.Attend annual departmental trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and regulatory requirements.Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve processes and overall efficiency.Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and sharing best practices with colleagues.Essential Skills:Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.High school diploma or GED.5–7 years of overall experience, including at least 5 years of experience performing blood draws.Demonstrated proficiency in blood collection using straight needles and butterfly needles.Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.Ability to clearly explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures to patients in a courteous and professional manner.Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to follow safety and regulatory requirements.Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, orders, and tasks in a fast-paced environment.Effective verbal communication skills for interacting with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel.Additional Skills & Qualifications:Experience working in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting with high specimen volumes.Proven ability to troubleshoot workflow issues and recommend process improvements.Comfort with answering telephone inquiries and reading laboratory results to provide accurate information.Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination tasks in a laboratory environment.Ability to interpret and fully understand physicians' orders for laboratory testing.Strong customer service orientation and a professional, patient-focused approach.Reliability and consistency in following established procedures and protocols.Work Environment:This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment that requires consistent attention to detail and adherence to strict procedures. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems. The position involves frequent interaction with patients, clinical staff, and other laboratory professionals, as well as regular use of computer systems and the Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and communication. You will follow OSHA and DEP regulations and departmental safety protocols, including decontamination procedures and proper specimen handling and storage. Work hours may vary based on facility needs, and you should be prepared to stand for extended periods and manage multiple tasks and specimen collections throughout your shift. Dress typically follows clinical or laboratory standards appropriate for direct patient contact and specimen handling.Job Type & Location:This is a Contract position based out of Imperial, CA.Pay and Benefits:The pay range for this position is $26.70 - $28.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
