CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. To accomplish its mission, CDC conducts important science and provides health information that protects our nation against expensive and dangerous health threats, and responds when these arise. Research Project: The Global Health Center Science Office advances scientific quality, integrity, timeliness, relevance, and compliance across global health programs. Its work includes human subjects protections, scientific clearance, extramural research oversight, health economics, federal information collection requirements, public health ethics, and training in scientific best practices. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will participate in projects that strengthen epidemiologic capacity, research integrity, scientific quality and communication, and the use of evidence in global health programs. Activities will include researching and developing an online or virtual training in descriptive epidemiology, collaborating on the planning and organizing of a Global Health Center Science Day, and developing science newsletter articles. Mentorship and scope: All activities will be completed under mentor guidance and will not include independently exercising responsibilities reserved for federal employees. Potential Fellowship Activities Include Develop, pilot, and evaluate online or virtual descriptive epidemiology training that uses global health case studies and person, place, and time analyses to support hypothesis generation. You will participate alongside scientists across CDC, including with CDC Office of Science (OS) staff to identify and select case studies for the training. Collaborate on planning and coordinating a Global Health Center Science Day, including the event theme and agenda; planning and scientific-review activities; calls for abstracts; oral and poster sessions; panels, awards, and leadership remarks; event materials; and participant evaluation. Review and synthesize guidance related to epidemiology, scientific integrity, research ethics, human-subjects protections, public health ethics, and health equity. Analyze scientific, administrative, event, or training data train to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement. Develop scientific and educational products such as reports, newsletter articles, presentations, data visualizations, decision tools, and training resources. Collaborate with multidisciplinary partners across GHC divisions, country offices, other CDC programs, and global health organizations. Learning Objectives Collaborate and complete a mentored capstone project researching, designing, developing, piloting, and evaluating an online or virtual training in descriptive epidemiology for hypothesis generation using person, place, and time. Explain how a global health science office supports scientific quality, integrity, compliance, relevance, and timely dissemination. Apply epidemiologic, research-ethics, human-subjects, public health ethics, human-rights, and health-equity principles to global health projects and scientific products. Apply scientific-event planning and evaluation principles to support a Global Health Center Science Day that promotes scientific exchange, collaboration, and recognition. Analyze and communicate scientific, epidemiologic, event, or training data through clear products for diverse audiences. Appointment Length The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation The appointment is full time. Participant Stipend Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. Citizenship Requirements This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only. ORISE Information This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a master's degree in the one of the relevant fields (Public Policy, Public Administration, Public Health, or related field).
